When it was announced that Jon Watts would be directing the new Spider-Man film, starring Tom Holland as the web-slinger, people didn't really know who Jon Watts was. Although now we know that he's directed two well-recieved films. Clown and Cop Car, both receiving good feedback from critics and fans alike. Although one was a horror film (Clown) and the other a road-thriller (Cop Car).
But there's no need to hesitate as Jon Watts is a passionate Spider-Man fan, telling us about his love for the popular Ultimate Spider-Man comic era, acknowledging Miles Morales and even going as far to have a full-chest Spider-Man tattoo to convince Marvel that he was the right man for the role. Although it wasn't always this way.
In a recent interview, promoting his new Christmas film 'The Night Before' starring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jonathan Levine. When asked by Cinema Blend about his talks with Marvel Studios, he has this to say;
"I've gone in to talk to them about probably three things now - Spider-Man being the one that I thought was the best fit for me. I think I had a pretty cool take, but it didn’t get as far as it looked like it got. They were like, ‘We want to do John Hughes tone in New York.’ I was like, ‘Oh, cool. Just f**king give it to me.” But then, I think, ultimately the more we spoke, the more I think we both kind of hesitated and I think their guy is a really, really good choice. He’s actually someone I know. But I would love to do a movie with them at some point."
While Jonathan Levine may have more experience with films such as 50/50, achieving a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and the zombie-romcom Warm Bodies, he has faith in his fellow indie director (and friend!) Jon Watts heralding the third era of the cinematic Spider-Man.
What are your thoughts on this? Would you like to have seen Jonathan Levine direct the upcoming Spider-Man film or do you side with the newcomer, Jon Watts?
