Kyle Sofia Nolan's Reviews

The Phantom Menace is the first of the 3 Star Wars prequels, and is written and directed by George Lucas. It's the story of 2 Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Ginn played by the one and only Liam Neeson (who is the best part) and Obi-Wan Kenobi played by Ewan McGregor as they discover a young boy named Anakin Skywalker who is supposed to be the one who will bring balance to the Force. Along the way, these 2 Jedi Knights battle against CGI objects, more CGI objects, and the great Darth Maul.

However, there is a problem; Anakin is NOT the main character!!

This story could have been and should have been way more than what is was, but it's the writing by Mr. Lucas that just destroys those chances. The actors only being able to react to blue screens the entire time make it very hard to sell convincing roles, and make it even worse with the terrible script by Mr. Lucas who for some reason did not allow anyone to read it over before he started. With one good scene (the Pod Race) Lucas incorporates horrible dialogue and scenes that have characters doing various things that don't make any sense (the list is so long). And, of course, there is Jar Jar Binks...

I think we can all agree about that 'thing'. Overall, the film itself is starting to look very dated; the battle droids can be cut in half in an instant, but the battles in space and on Naboo look more dated than Return of the Jedi which came out in 1983. And Jake Lloyd as Anakin... is not good. His opening line to Padme, "are you an angel?" is terrible and completely ruins his character. But, the fact that he isn't found until about halfway into the movie is awful because the story should have shown us how he turned to the Dark Side; instead, audiences have to wait until Revenge of the Sith to see any of that happen. The Phantom Menace is one of the most disappointing movies of all time because of the silly and horrible writing of Lucas to make this movie more about a trade organizing, Senate meetings, people just walking around on fake rooms giving us exposition and nothing fun happening until the final battle with Darth Maul which is awesome I will not lie!
