HELLO EVERYBODY! And welcome to a brand new writing series on Moviepilot.com titled: IS IT WORTH SEEING IN IMAX? And today I ask the existential question: Is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 worth paying the extra 10$ for an IMAX ticket? Let's find out!
IS IT ANY GOOD? In my opinion, this is the weakest of the Hunger Games movies. I was hoping for a climactic battle against the peacekeepers and President Snow, instead, I got a really boring movie with a handful of action scenes and one of the most anti-climactic endings I've seen in a long time. THAT being said, the performances are great, the cinematography is stunning and the 2-3 action scenes are awesome and epic.
MOVIE SCORE: 3/5 stars
PICTURE QUALITY AND SHARPNESS: The film is presented in its native 2:40:1 aspect ratio. Black bars that appear at the top and bottom of the IMAX screen is perfectly normal. The picture quality is incredible. The level of detail that is on the actors and actresses' faces is unparalleled and unlike anything I've ever seen before. The lizard/mutant/hybrid/zombies thingy look amazing on an IMAX screen. The cinematography is beautiful. But I noticed a bit of grain in some of the scenes that distracted me.
PICTURE SCORE: 4,95/5 stars
SOUND QUALITY: The sound, like most IMAX experiences. Is incredible. The way it's designed makes you feel like you're part of the adventure with Katniss and all of the other members. The quiet moments are quiet, the loud moments are loud. The explosions and gunshots are clearer and the lizard scene really benefits the IMAX sound system and quality. When birds are chirping and flying in the background, they are everywhere. Thus, the power of Dynamic Range emerges. The sound is incredible. Nuff said.
SOUND SCORE: 5/5
OVERALL: For what it is, I would recommend paying the extra $$$ to see Mockingjay Part 2 in IMAX because the action scenes are incredibly enhanced by that format and makes you immersed in it more. BUT, that being said, prepare to fall asleep during the final act because the sound design is ''Too quiet'' and ''meditating''.
OVERALL SCORE: 4,75/5 stars
