It's not every day that a 16-year-old is comfortable enough in their own skin that they're able to reveal their sexual preferences to their family, let alone the entire world, but being the daughter of powerful, supportive and liberal parents no doubt helps ones confidence levels.
Back in August Lily-Rose Depp, the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, revealed herself as 'sexually fluid' via artist iO Tillet Wright's campaign, 'We Are You'. The project photographed 10,000 Americans who are "anything other than 100 percent straight", in order to raise awareness of just how many people are affected by homophobia and discrimination.
A cause which Johnny Depp is thrilled his daughter is supporting, not only because as an accepting father he's proud she's shaping up to be an intelligent and humanistic young woman, but also probably because sexual fluidity is already a topic of conversation within the Depp household, as his new wife Amber Heard is famously bisexual.
Talking of his daughter, Depp told the Daily Mail:
"She’s got thousands of followers on social media, and they were all taken completely by surprise. But not me. I already knew because she tells me everything - she’s not afraid to say anything to me. We’re super-tight and I’m very proud of our relationship."
And Johnny clearly is honored to have such an open relationship with Lily-Rose, as throughout his statement he continually reiterates what a smart and together person she is, claiming that she's far surpassed himself and his friends in terms of social awareness.
His father role hasn't evaporated completely of course, as he reassuringly adds that he's always there for her when she needs it, but the reality of her developing from a little girl to young woman has certainly dawned.
"It’s such a funny thing when you see your daughter transitioning from your baby, your little girl, to suddenly being a young woman. If you’re not really looking for it, you can miss it, and Lily-Rose is on that road already and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. She’s been snatched up by Karl Lagerfeld - which is a coincidence, as he spotted her mother when she was the same age, too - and when I see her with make-up and all that stuff, it’s really disturbing, because she’s a very beautiful girl, and it’s all happening so fast."
At the end of the day it seems that although Johnny would prefer his daughter to stay tiny and dependent (in the same way most fathers do), he's nothing but supportive when it comes to her being comfortable with who she is.
"Her becoming an actress was never my dream or my desire for her, but that’s what she enjoys doing, and it’s her passion and it’s where she ended up. And she’s got the goods - she can certainly deliver."
