One of the biggest announcements that the gaming world has seen in a while, was the return of an old classic. Final Fantasy 7 - a game that is often considered to be one of the greatest of all time - is making a return in the form of a Remake for the XBOX One and PS4. But who's going to be playing it?
Square Enix will undoubtedly start the process of modernising this product for a new audience. But we're wondering whether the process of modernisation may impact on the quality of the original, or at least alter the impression that we have of Final Fantasy 7 now. Therefore, for those that like JRPGs, but have yet to play Final Fantasy 7, should they wait for the release date of the Remake, or experience it in its original form?
Should the Original Be Played Before the Final Fantasy 7 Remake?
Video Games are a very unique art form. If we were talking about cinema for instance, and someone was deciding about whether they should see the original Oldboy from Korea, or the abhorrent mess that is the American remake, I would naturally insist that they watch the former. But it can be difficult with games, not only in obtaining old games, but the act of playing them can be jarring for modern gamers.
We adapt and evolve very quickly in the gaming industry. Our tastes have developed over the years, and we've become accustomed to a certain level of quality. While Final Fantasy 7 is still a fantastic game, and was an absolute masterpiece at the time of its release, it may be difficult to recommend the original to a modern JRPG fan. The combat system is really outdated, the graphics are fairly bad by now, and it can be difficult to connect with an old game like this the way people who played it in 1997 did.
However, that being said, I love the art of video games. I'm fascinated by its history, and I think that anyone who loves gaming enough should check out older masterpieces to further understand how much its changed over the years. Gaming history is awesome, and it's completely fascinating.
Playing an old game like this requires a certain mindset. Go in expecting a similar level of quality to a modern JRPG masterpiece, and you'll be disappointed. But that doesn't mean that it's not worth trying.
Will You Wait For the Remake's Release Date?
In my opinion, if you want to get the full experience out of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, then you should engage with the original product. You'll be able to enjoy the updates more, you can join in on the discussions of whether you liked the improvements, and perhaps you'll actually enjoy the original even more. In my opinion, if you're interested in games and gaming culture, all the old classics are worth your time.
Therefore, I think you should check out Final Fantasy 7 before the release date of the Remake.
