Scarlett Johansson has always been a respected Hollywood actress, but she shot to the giddy heights of geek badassery when she was cast as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since the character's debut appearance in Iron Man 2, Black Widow has been a fan fave, and subsequent movies like The Avengers and Captain America: Winter Soldier developed Natasha's character, solidifying her position as one of the central characters of the MCU.

Naturally, Black Widow is set to be one of the major players in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409). The trailer for the film has just been released (finally!), and although our glimpses of Natasha are few and far between, her appearance in the trailer reveals a lot more than you might think...

Let me just contain my nerd excitement for a minute... ok, I'm good. This trailer is absolutely fantastic, and there's plenty to look forward to in Civil War. Despite the trailer playing down Black Widow's importance she does stand out, and here's why Civil War might just be her best Marvel film yet.

What We Learned From The Trailer

Black Widow's usually the one dishing out dry humour quips before delivering a serious ass kicking. But in the midst of all the fighting and raised emotions in the Civil War trailer, Natasha Romanoff stands out as being... pretty calm, actually. As the Avengers come to blows over the issue of accountability, Natasha seems to be trying to keep the peace.

Nat: “I know how much Bucky means to you… Stay out of this one. Please. You’ll only make things worse.”
Steve: “Are you saying you’ll arrest me?”

There's so much to unpack from this exchange alone. This could be a warning, or it could mean that Natasha's actually working to solve the issue before it spirals into a conflict. It was confirmed a few months ago that Black Widow would be siding with Iron Man. This seemed incongruous with Natasha and Steve's friendship in Winter Soldier, and many fans pointed out that Nat seemed to want to distance herself from government control in the last Captain America film...

But in the light of the new trailer, it seems like Natasha is taking a more measured approach, thinking about the practicalities of the situation. She's probably aware that fighting the mysterious "Accords" would spiral into well, a civil war, and only perpetuate the idea that the Avengers are vigilantes. It's possible that in the wake of SHIELD's dissolution Natasha believes the Accords are the best step towards transparency and accountability.

So, that went well.
So, that went well.

To be honest, this makes a lot of sense. During the Marvel movies we've watched Natasha go from a ruthless assassin to questioning the morality of her actions, and Civil War gives her the chance to take a stand for what she believes in. Besides, after she revealed her darkest secrets to the world at the end of Winter Soldier it's understandable that she would want to distance herself from the idea of vigilantism and violence without consequences.

Keeping The Peace

Black Widow is definitely going to struggle with her own morality in Civil War, but the D23 trailer proved she won't lose her sense of humour...

Black Widow: [pausing in the middle of a fight] "We're still friends, right?"
Hawkeye: "Depends how hard you hit me."

Natasha and Clint Barton have been lifelong friends, so seeing them on opposing sides was surprising for many fans. The new trailer also hinted at a fight scene between Cap and Black Widow, which could get really personal really quickly.

“You know what’s about to happen. Do you really want to punch your way out of this one?”

After overcoming their trust issues to work together in Winter Soldier, and leading the New Avengers at the end of Age Of Ultron, it seems as though Natasha and Steve's relationship will hit a roadblock in Civil War. Even though this moment definitely seems like it precedes a fight between the two of them, Black Widow is still giving Cap a chance to avoid the conflict.

All of this really positions Black Widow as the peacekeeper, whose inevitable role may be to reunite the group, reminding them that at the end of the day they're all on the same side. Of course, she's not afraid to kick some butt before the matter's resolved...

Ultimately, the Civil War trailer revealed that Black Widow's role in the film might not be what we expected, but it still makes a lot of sense with her character development. And who knows, maybe she'll be able to bring the team together again after the fighting ends.
