Earlier today the first official teaser for Marvel's upcoming Captain America: Civil War hit the web and gave us our best look yet at the film.
To start off, I'm a big Marvel fan, but honestly I had some hesitation about Civil War. Was it simply going to another Avengers film? Are there serious stakes? But from this trailer, my worries have disappeared.
The trailer does an excellent job of making this feel like a Captain America story. Yes there are dozens of other heroes but it's all about Cap and his relationship with his best friend turned enemy turned friend again Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier.
With S.H.I.E.L.D gone and no supervision over superheroes in the world, the government want to take control of the Avengers as many view them as "vigilantes" not heroes. General 'Thunderbolt' Ross played by William Hurt reprising his role from The Incredible Hulk breaks the news to Cap that to carry on he's gonna have to enlist with the government. But of course, after the events of The Winter Soldier, Captain Rogers understandably has some issues with government.
After Steve disagrees with the new superhero registration act or "Sokovia Accords" as it's called in this film, it seems as though other heroes are trying to take him in, such as Black Widow and Iron Man. Stark explains to Rogers that there no different than the bad guys if they don't accept their limitations.
After this really excellent set up, the two opposing sides go to war for that they believe. Cap, Bucky, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and Ant-Man on one side, Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow, Black Panther and Vision on the other.
And of course the trailer ends with a magnificent wide shot of Cap and Bucky battling Iron Man. And then a rather upsetting conversation takes place; "I'm sorry Tony, you know I wouldn't do this if I had any other choice. But he's my friend" says Cap, to which Tony replies "So was I.". That is definitely my favorite part of the trailer, because it establishes real stakes, these new allies turned friends have to battle for what they believe in.
Heroes missing from the trailer are Vision, Ant-Man and Spider-Man but I only suspect they'll have minor roles and appear in only a couple of scenes anyway. But we do get a good look at Black Panther!
Overall I am really impressed with this first teaser. It establishes the story, tone and stakes perfectly and I can't wait to see more!
