Suicide Squad is already proving to be one of the most interesting superhero (themed) movies of 2016: focusing on DC's villains, the film will see deranged criminals team up to save the world. Directed by The Fast & The Furious's David Ayer, and featuring a stellar cast, Suicide Squad looks set to be the pull-no-punches darkly comic counter to the hotly anticipated [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870).

With a cast full of villains, it's difficult to deduce the plot for Suicide Squad, and no role is more mysterious than the Joker. The trailer revealed how crucial Joker is to Harley Quinn's backstory, but is there more to his role than simple flashbacks? See if you can spot the game-changing Easter egg in the trailer...

It seems like Joker is set to have a bigger role in the plot than we'd originally expected, and he might just be the big bad villain that Amanda Waller assembles Task Force X to take down. How do we know this? Well, it's a matter of business...

Jared Leto Drops Hints

After Heath Ledger's iconic portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, Jared Leto's got some big clown shoes to fill. Understandably, he and director David Ayer have worked hard to create a version of the Joker that really stands out from the crowd, making waves among the fanbase as a totally new interpretation of the character. And Jared Leto has some very interesting ideas about the Joker's characterization.

In his interview with Empire, Jared Leto gave some insights into his journey to become Joker, and in doing so he revealed some clues for the villain's role in Suicide Squad!

"I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It’s something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground. I think I’ll be cooling down for the rest of my life."

Producer Charles Roven also talked about how this Joker compares to Ledger's version. What Roven has to say really does line up with the hidden hints in the trailer, but maybe not in the way you'd expect...

"He’s more social… a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath."

We usually view the Joker as a lone figure, and it's true that in the DC comics he doesn't tend to play well with others. the idea of the Clown Prince of Crime being a "smart businessman" is odd, and kind of terrifying when we start to wonder what kind of business the Joker could possibly go into. It could be that this is exactly what Task Force X are sent to stop: after all, we did see a gang of Joker's goons in the trailer...

Subtle Hints!

There's a lot going on in the Suicide Squad trailer, but if you're watching closely there are some vital plot hints to be found. We see Joker's gang twice, first in a flashback as they raid Arkham Asylum, presumably to aid Joker's escape.

This obviously directly precedes Joker torturing Dr Harleen Quinzel, which is a pivotal moment in her journey to becoming Harley Quinn. But this isn't the only time we see this costumed gang help the Joker out...

They seem to be shooting a path for the Joker to enter a mysterious facility, and he's not just helped by costumed sidekicks this time - check out this very businessman looking character helping the Joker...

So what does all this mean? Aside from the fact that the Joker clearly has a gang to do his bidding, it seems he's also planning some kind of heist, and may well have teamed up with other villains to do so. This will probably have huge implications for the plot of Suicide Squad: what is Joker after?
