Well it's been 24 hours since [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) dropped their first trailer, so if you've been living under a rock, and missed it here it is:
It's a pretty epic first trailer, there's no question about that! The only problm is now that I've watched it a few hundred times it just leaves me with more questions than answers!
1. What Did Bucky Do? Who's Coming to Kill Him?
The trailer opens with Cap, Bucky and Falcon in the scene that was teased in Ant-Man. Cap asks Bucky if he remembers him and it's pretty obvious he does. He explains that men are closing in on them, and they don't care if Bucky is in control of himself anymore, they are coming to kill them.
Where in the film does this take place? We know there's a funeral, we know Cap fights Crossbones. There's also a scene in the trailer showing Cap looking out a window, seeing Bucky for a second until a truck passes and he disappears. I'm guessing these three things all happen before we find Bucky tied down with Cap and Falcon. I'm guessing that there's an incident, or sighting of Bucky and Cap tracks him down after the Superhuman Registration act is already in effect. This would explain Steve and Widow's exchange in the trailer where she's begging him to not go after Bucky, and he asks "You saying you'll arrest me?" Perhaps Cap is satisfied with living a normal life after refusing to register, but when Bucky re-surfaces he quickly changes his mind in order to find his friend.
The question is still burning though: What did Bucky do? We may have to wait until May to find out, but if he's truly reformed did he even do anything? Could the "thing" referenced be something in his past? Someone he killed? Tony Stark's parents perhaps? Black Panther's father? The other burning question is who is coming after them? S.H.I.E.L.D. still exists, but only as a secret underground group. It's unlikely they'd be chasing down Cap or Bucky. If the trailer is to be believed these men are wearing uniforms that say POLICE, but I'm guessing it's going to be more complicated than that!
2. How Much of a Role Will General Ross Play?
Most of you probably made the connection that we've seen this man in the MCU before. Back in 2008 he was the antagonist in The Incredible Hulk, Ross was determined to chase down Banner and cage the beast. In the Civil War trailer we see him talking with Cap, Widow and Falcon about the "Sokovia Accords", and that even though Cap may consider himself a hero, many consider him a vigilante. He tells the Avengers that the world will no longer tolerate them going on without accountability.
What kind of position is Ross in now? When we last saw him he was working for the American military, but now it sounds like he's speaking for someone larger as if he has authority to speak for the world. Is the World Security Council re-instated after S.H.I.E.L.D.'s destruction? In the trailer he says "There will be consequences," just as Cap and Iron Man meet and begin to fight, insinuating that Ross is the one who called Stark to bring back Cap in. Could this be true, or just the way the trailer was edited?
Maybe most importantly has Ross been experimenting on himself with the Hulk serum yet? In the comics he becomes Red Hulk after some experiments of his own so it's exciting that he's re-entering the MCU!
3. Is Black Widow Really on Stark's Side?
It was confirmed already the sides that each Avenger would take during the Superhero Civil War in released concept art, so it was no surprise that we see Widow begging Steve to leave the Bucky incident alone. Many of us have wondered if she's actually a double agent and spy for Cap on Stark's team, and she'll turn part way through the film. In the trailer their conversation on the phone, where Cap is obviously in hiding, ends with Steve asking "You saying you'll arrest me?". Unless Stark is right next to her and this is all for show I think we've confirmed that Nat really does choose Stark side over Captain America!
4. Why Did Cap and Falcon give up their suits??
Part way through the trailer we see Cap and Falcon standing at what looks like gunpoint as someone hauls their suits and Cap's shield away. Could this be because they refused to register? Their names are already public, but maybe if they refuse to agree to the "Sokovia Accords", or Registration Act the government confiscates their suits as a means of forcing them out of the superhero business.
This could go back to my previous comment that Steve and Sam step down as superheroes because of their disagreement with Ross and the Accords. They step down until they find out where Bucky is hiding, and that that's what sends them into vigilante status.
5. Why is Black Panther Even Involved?
Now don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see this amazing character finally brought to life in the MCU, but what ties him to our characters and specifically this story?
We know from the released concept art that Black Panther is siding with Iron Man's registration, but why? Could it be that the "incident" with Crossbones in the beginning of the film takes place in Wakanda so Panther has a personal stake in the the new law? Could it be that Iron Man and Hulk's fight in Age of Ultron was located in Wakanda? Could Bucky have killed Panther's father, the former King of Wakanda so he's looking for revenge? I have no answers for this burning question, only theories but time will tell!
6. Who Will Win in a Fight Black Panther or Winter Soldier?
This isn't a fight I was expecting to see, but it looks pretty freaking epic! It adds credibility to the theory that Bucky is the one that killed Panther's father, the former King so Panther has hunted him down for revenge, possibly putting him in Stark's path as they release they have a common enemy.
From the look of the fight in the trailer it would appear that Panther would win in the fight....and in a foot race with Cap too!
7. Where Are Vision, Ant-Man and Spider-Man?
We saw more Black Panther than I was expecting in the first Civil War trailer. As a new, and long awaited character it's a surprise we got so much of him! There were, however, still three characters missing from the trailer: Spider-Man, Vision and Ant-Man! All three of these characters are confirmed to appear with Ant-Man on Cap's side, Vision on Iron Man's, and Spider-Man's allegiance still ambiguous. So why didn't they appear in the trailer?
Rumor has it that Vision who, as he stated in Age of Ultron, is "on the side of life" as opposed to siding with neither the Avengers nor Ultron, will only temporarily be on Stark's team as he sees both sides tearing themselves down. Fan theories also include Vision leaving Earth sometime during Civil War and possibly running into the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, it's also possible that Vision doesn't appear simply because his character takes a large amount of CGI to finish. Some of the scenes In Age of Ultron's trailer had Vision later added using CGI, so it's very likely the same has happened here.
Ant-Man has also been confirmed, and thanks to the footage Marvel released at D3 we know that Scott Lang will be enamored by meeting his hero: Captain America. We also know from the ending of Ant-Man that Falcon was searching for Lang, in hopes to use him to help hide Bucky. It could be that Lang's appearance is a mere cameo, so it didn't warrant an addition to the first trailer. However I'm still hoping to see him join in the fight against Stark's side. We all want to see him fly through the air on one of Hawkeye's arrows! It's also possible that, like Vision, Ant-Man takes so much CGI that he hasn't been added to the final footage yet.
Spider-Man's lack of appearance is actually no surprise. We know that Marvel and Sony are planning a solo Spider-Man film for 2017 and that Civil War is just a cameo to introduce the wall-crawler into the MCU as an established character. It's also possible that Spider-Man won't appear until the final trailer, if any, much like Vision was saved for the final Age of Ultron trailer, and even then it was just a cameo of his eyes opening to tease his introduction!
8. War-Machine to Die?
The trailer shows us a pretty epic battle between Stark's Avengers and Cap's, but which team would win that fight? It looks like things don't end very well for War-Machine, and Stark looks extremely concerned, but could he die?
While it's unlikely that Marvel would give away such a huge death in a movie trailer it is likely that someone will die in the film, why not Rhodey? We have no Iron Man film planned for the near future and he's the oldest "sidekick" character in the MCU so it make for a complicated twist. In the comic storyline one of Cap's Avengers, Goliath, was killed in a battle with Stark's team. While I do think it would make sense that someone would die in the film, I also think it would permanently alienate Tony and Steve.
9. Can Stark Fight Off Both Cap and Bucky?
While it looks like Stark is getting beat down in the trailer as he falls to his knees he could always just fly away at any moment and take down the building with the others inside!
I was expecting the trailer to end with a fight scene between Steve and Tony so this more than I could have hoped for! Stark looks beaten, and check out Bucky using Cap's shield! It still brings up the largest question of all:
10. How Can This Movie Possibly End???
For me this was the biggest take away from the trailer. I can not figure out how this movie will end, or even how I want it to end! Will an Avenger die? How will the team, and friends, survive the divide? Will Captain America and Iron Man get past their disagreements? The Avengers are completely split down the middle, and newcomers like Ant-Man, Black Panther and Bucky haven't even met all the others before. Even if Stark and Steve can get past their differences, can the others who don't know each other? This film is going to push the MCU to a very different place than it has been before!
How can this movie end? Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr are both nearing the end of their MCU contracts, each only have a single film left. They could always extend but eventually they will have to play these characters for a final time. Could it be sooner than we hope?
The comic book's Civil War story ends with Cap coming to blows with Stark in the streets when civilians attack him as they seem his as the vigilante. It's that moment that he realizes he's wrong and Stark is right and gives himself up for arrest. His team is then given pardons or leaves the country to avoid the Superhuman Registration Act. The real ending came later when Rogers is walking into the courthouse to face trial and he's shot and killed. Could we see an ending as dark as this in the MCU? Could children, the target audience, handle seeing their hero killed on the big screen? Eventually in the comics it's realized that Cap wasn't killed but the bullet transported him into another realm. Could this bizarre twist happen in the MCU? If Thanos is pulling the Avengers strings is it possible that he fakes Cap's death and sells him to the Collector? I think that would be a pretty interesting twist of fate, how would Rogers handle being part of that museum?
I suppose only time will tell how the film will end, and what kind of consequences it'll leave for the entire MCU. No matter how this film ends I still hope that we see Stark and Rogers make up. It would be a huge payoff to see them in Avengers: Infinity War Part I or Part II team up and sacrifice themselves to destroy Thanos. In that moment of their deaths they make amends, and their passing could unite the rest of the Avengers for the future of the MCU.
