“Divided we fall.” Those three words on the recent posters encompass what Marvel’s 'Civil War' is all about. Heroes will battle heroes; friendships will be broken; lives will be lost. Debuting last night during Jimmy Kimmel Live, the first teaser trailer for [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) gave us plenty of footage in what looks to be a phenomenal film. The Russo brothers are at it again as they direct this second sequel for the primary protagonist, Captain America. We saw what the Russo brothers were capable of accomplishing when we saw last year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now with more heroes to juggle around and a stronger storyline, the Russo brothers look to once again be up to the task. Check out the latest trailer below and see for yourself:
Drawing the storyline from Mark Millar’s graphic novel Civil War, Captain America: Civil War will showcase two of our favorite Avengers combating each other over what they believe is right. Differences aside, this film looks to not only divide the heroes but also the audience. While we all both love Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark and Chris Evans iteration of Captain America, this may be a VERY difficult film to choose a side.
While I would personally choose to be on Cap’s side, a part of me also wants to believe why Stark would want the heroes to have limitations after the result of Ultron’s creation and destruction. This film will likely be Marvel’s darkest film to date (as it should be) and may go down as one of Marvel’s best films. I don’t know about you but I cannot wait to see this movie but first I’d like to give you my thoughts on the latest trailer. So without further adieu here are “5 Big Reveals in the Captain America: Civil War Trailer.”
#1. It will be a Captain America led Story
This may seem obvious, but I am satisfied to know that this movie will in fact primarily focus on America’s hero. I wrote an article months ago that gave you my expectations on this upcoming film. My number one point was that the film MUST focus heavily on Cap since it is his movie after all. With so many other characters taking in on the spotlight including Ant-Man, Vision, Black Panther, Spider-Man and of course Iron-Man, it was essential that the Russo brothers stuck to their guns and created this film to center around Cap. By the look of the trailer, they have succeeded in every way and my hopes for the film have rose even higher. Cap might have to team up with Falcon and Bucky to take down the enemy even if it means fighting Tony Stark (which I’ll get to later on).
#2. William Hurt is back as Thunderbolt Ross
"You've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's something the world can no longer tolerate."
Remember that film The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner which debuted back in 2008? Well, that film that many may have forgotten about is in fact a part of this cinematic universe. William Hurt played General Thunderbolt Ross and was tasked to finding Bruce Banner and taking him down. Now played by Mark Ruffalo, The Incredible Hulk now has new meaning by bringing back one of it’s core characters. Though not a general any longer, Thaddeus Ross is clearly working for the government and his mission is to implement the Sokovia Accords aka The Superhuman Registration Act.
The Sokovia Accords are documents that limit the heroes tasks and enable the government to initiate proper protocol when needed. In the above image we see Ross hand over the documents to none other than the Scarlet Witch. We know this is her based on the black nail polish she is wearing. This makes sense given that the destruction of Sokovia (her home country) was where the big battle against Ultron took place. It was also the location of her brothers (Quicksilver) death.
We know that Tony Stark is on the side of the Accords but is Scarlet Witch also in favor of signing the documents? Well, I would say no for two reasons. One, she WON’T be on Stark’s side after what his father Howard Stark did to her parents. Also, towards the end of the trailer we see Wanda fighting on Team Captain America. Could she have some consideration for signing the documents? Absolutely because she may feel that the heroes should be responsible for their actions. However, based on the evidence I would say no.
#3. Our First Official Look at Black Panther
Finally what most of us have been waiting for is the official reveal of T’Challa aka the Black Panther. We see the Black Panther in all his glory in a few shots throughout the trailer. Based on the team photos that were released a few months back, we know that the Black Panther will be on Team Iron-Man. Once again this year's film ,Avengers: Age of Ultron, will play a pivotal role in this upcoming film. The scene in the movie when Tony Stark in his Hulk Buster armor is trying to take down Bruce Banner’s raging Hulk takes place in the nation of Wakanda. T’Challa could not have been happy with this and would hold the Avengers accountable. I would label him more as a third party since he should be more in between since Tony Stark was the one who created all of the mess in the first place.
We get a few nice shots of T’Challa kicking the Winter Solider’s a** in the trailer as well as a chase scene between him, Bucky, and Cap which you can see below.
The Black Panther must be eyeing Bucky down for a reason as I’m led to believe it has something to do with Bucky’s past. Could Bucky have been the one who murdered T’Challa’s father? In the comics it was the work of Ulysses Klaw who we were introduced to in Avengers: Age of Ultron. How much of a role will the Black Panther play in this film? By the looks of it, he will be a major character as this will be his first introduction to this Marvel cinematic universe.
#4. Black Widow is Against Captain America
Another article I wrote recently proclaims that Black Widow could possibly be the spy in this movie. Even though the poster suggested otherwise that she is clearly on Team Iron-Man, I still believe that she will fight for both sides. It would be hard for me to believe that after everything she went through with Cap in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that she would allow the Sokovia Accords to stand in the way of their friendship. While this will be a difficult decision for Natasha to make, the trailer clearly shows that she is against what Cap is willing to do stating, “I know how much Bucky means to you. Stay out of this one. Please, you’ll only make this worse.”
Cap responds with, “Are you saying you’ll arrest me?” Even though we don’t hear Natasha’s immediate answer, we can all speculate and say that she may respond with something like, “If that’s what it takes.” Later in the trailer Natasha informs Cap of the repercussions that’s about to take place saying, “You know what’s about to happen. Do you really want to punch your way out of this?” Natasha is pleading with Cap but he knows what Bucky has meant to him. Bucky was his true friend since WWII and knows that he was brainwashed by Hydra over the years. He wants to save him and give back the life he deserves.
#5. There will be Consequences
The final moments of the trailer are definitely the highlight and give us real insight as to why this film is truly a ‘Civil War.’ The Avengers are now disassembled and when asked by Falcon “What do we do?” Cap responds with an assertive, “We fight.” Either give up or fight. Cap will not go down without a fight as he is a WWII survivor and knows what its like to win a war.
The above photo tells us all we need to know about this film. The movie will be heartbreaking and will make us all ask ourselves “What side are you on?” The death of Quicksilver from Avengers: Age of Ultron was agonizing to say the least, but the death or deaths in this movie will be more so. I could go on a rant here and say what deaths I believe will take place in this film but I won’t. What I will say is that I believe there will be multiple deaths in this movie. Perhaps there will be a death on both sides of the battlefield (maybe War Machine and Hawkeye?) For the battle to end, there MUST be a death somewhere and will clearly be the emotional tug we all need while watching this movie.
“You can’t accept limitations? We’re no better than the bad guys.”
“That’s not the way I see it.”
In this scene here, we see Tony and Steve about to come to blows with one another. Steve see’s the Sokovia Accords one way, whereas Tony views it a different way. “We’re no different than the bad guys” is really a telling quote from Stark’s perspective. What I believe he means by this quote is that if the enemy should be held accountable for their actions, so should the heroes. Rogers clearly does not agree with this which is one of the reasons why they are fighting in the first place.
By far the most heartfelt moment in the trailer were the lines spoken at the end between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. As Rogers vows to protect Bucky at all costs he exclaims to Tony, “I’m sorry Tony. You know I wouldn’t do this if I had any other choice. But he’s my friend (Bucky).” Tony then answers back with an emotional response: “So was I.”
Poor Tony. In the final scenes we see him get the sh** kicked out of him. Tony cannot compete against a tag team duo of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. While it’s awesome to see Bucky fight alongside Cap, it’s hard to watch Iron-Man failing to keep up with them. A part of me hopes Iron-Man can make it through this fight. Even though I don’t agree with the whole enforcement of the Registration Act, I can understand Tony’s viewpoint just by this trailer alone.
Iron-Man is held accountable for what he did by creating a monster that was Ultron which unfortunately for him backfired. All Tony wanted to do was create an AI program which would allow the heroes to take a break from all the fighting and put themselves out of harms way. It’s much easier to repair a robot than a human life after all. The people of Sokovia would of course pay the price and so would Wandas’ twin brother Pietro. Iron-Man feels that the Accords are a necessary way to end all of the destruction he has caused even if it means to limit the heroes actions.
Even though this trailer did not dive deep into it, there will be a major event (rumored to be caused by Crossbones) that takes place which also enforces the Accords to be implemented. The beginning of the trailer showed an explosion going off inside of what looks to be an office building. This is most likely the final straw and will cause the government to take evasive action. You can check out the screen shot of the scene I'm referring to below:
This movie will no doubt be one emotional ride from start to finish. There will be a lot of civilian casualties and possibly deaths from our beloved superheroes. It’s nice to see both sides of the ‘Civil War’ in order to better the experience from the audiences perspective. It will certainly be difficult to choose a side since we’ve all grown to love these heroes. Below you will see a picture of the films official poster which describes the ENTIRE film’s setting:
