Many people have opinions of the 1995 film of Mortal Kombat... Mostly, they were negative, and for good reason, such as terrible casts and not much excitement... To me, however, I grew up around Mortal Kombat, and I enjoyed the film, since I was 2, despite the negative points. However, since the release of more in-depth storylines throughout the Mortal Kombat series, I think a Reboot may be in order. Perhaps, a spanning series, which can be highly plausible, since we had the following in chronological order, based on the games alone, and without the comics, TV Shows, and other stories:
- 1. Earthrealm's 10th Tournament and their Victory over Outworld.
- 2. Shao Kahn's invasion, and defeat.
- 3. Shinnok's invasion, and defeat.
- 4. The Deadly Alliance
- 5. The Return of Onaga, the Dragon King.
- 6. Armageddon.
Now, if I were to create a story, I would probably use the first plot, but go into details of the tournament, such as how it was created, how many victories can Outworld claim, and the invasion of Edenia, as example. Secondly, I would show like the popular character's in action, like Liu Kang and Kung Lao training with Raiden and Bo Rai Cho, Sonya and Jax raiding Kano's smuggling operation, and Johnny Cage as a down-struck celebrity. Then, each of the characters were given invitations -with exception to Sonya, who snuck on board- and were transported to the island. For the cast, I would go with this line-up:
Liu Kang - Daniel Wu
Reason: He captures the look of Liu Kang, as a disciplined fighter, and his skill was shown in the series "Into the Badlands". I think he can pull it off.
Kung Lao - Jet Lee
Reason: Jet Lee has incredible combat skill, and if it wasn't for his look, I think he could have been Liu Kang. However, I can see him wearing Kung Lao's signature hat more than Wu.
Sonya Blade: Kristanna Loken
Reason: She already has ties to the franchise from her role as Taja in Mortal Kombat: Conquest. She can fill the role as Sonya with ease.
Jax: Ice Cube
Reason: I was considering Terry Crews, but in Jax's persona, he is the more dead serious than the crazed fighter, so I had to really think... Ice Cube has that serious attitude, and his acting matches a perfect description of Jax.
Kano: Jason Statham
Reason: What we know about Kano? Someone British plays his role. Not to be stereotypical, but Stathem has that gritty action tone, and from his work in the Crank films, him playing as Kano would be a cinch.
Johnny Cage: Chris Pratt (no reason at all. He has the look, and he has done action.)
Scorpion: Ian Anthony Dale
Reason: For starters, he portrayed a really good Scorpion in the MK Legacy series from Machinima. Secondly, Hanzo Hasashi's (Scorpion) character is centered around the premise of vengeance, pain, and suffering.
Baraka: Vin Deisel
Reason: Vin has played hero for a while, but with his build, I think pulling off Baraka would be easy, along with the fact that he has that "I am ruthless" look, which can summarize Baraka in three words.
Raiden: Cristopher Lambert
Reason: His work as Raiden in the film was beyond great, but that film is cursing him. This could be a shot at redemption.
Bo Rai Cho: Steven Blum
Reason: Not many can pass a farting grandmaster with an Alcohol Addiction, but in the storyline, he trained Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Shujinko in the ways of fighting. Steven Blum portrayed Bo Rai Cho in Mortal Kombat X, and in my opinion, succeeded.
Shang Tsung: Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (elderly Shang Tsung) and Bruce Locke (young version)
Reason: they have ties to Mortal Kombat, and Tagawa did well as Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat film, but I believed he stepped the boundary as a fighter, so I was thinking that Shang absorbed enough souls to revitalize himself, and forms into Locke, giving him a battle ready approach.
Kitana: Li Bingbing
Reason: She has the combat style of Kitana, which can be seen in her popular film Forbidden Kingdom. Also, her appearance can easily pull of Kitana
With itch the cast established, and the plot summarized, I think this could be an effective reboot, and it will also use the talents of actors who either need redemption of the first film or give estounding credentials.
