Following on from Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra quickly become an iconic show. Known for its beautiful animation and mature plot, Legend Of Korra brought a level of style and sophistication to children's programming. Unfortunately, the show did have some network struggles, with Nickelodeon abruptly shifting the episodes to stream online instead of on TV. Creators Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko addressed this in an interview with io9 a year ago...
"It's no secret that Avatar, especially Korra, is not typical Nickelodeon fare. And so they've had kind of a hard time fitting it into their programming."
Inevitably, the show was cancelled, but Legend Of Korra finished on a strong note with season 4. The show really came into its own in the last two seasons, and while it's a shame that it was cancelled, the creators neatly tied up loose plot threads. There's still plenty of story to tell though, which is why they decided to continue Legend Of Korra in a new comic!
Comic Plot Details
There will be 3 volumes in total of the Legend of Korra comic book, which definitely means that the creators have a lot more story planned for the Avatar.
The creators confirmed that this new story would be set right after Korra and Asami's return from the Spirit World, which means we'll get development of all our favorite characters without having to play catch up, as explained by IGN.
"Same as the Avatar comics, the Korra comics will detail the aftermath of the show, with no major time jump from Book Four to Volume One. In other words, the comics will pick up around where the animated series left off."
There's plenty to look forward to with this setting, as although all the plot threads were tied up at the end of season 4, we still want to find out how all the characters are getting along. Personally, I can't wait to see Mako's reaction to discovering his two ex-girlfriends are dating each other!
Korra & Asami's Relationship
This will be the focus of the new comic, and many fans couldn't be more delighted.
There were obvious network restrictions to DiMartino and Konietzko revealing the nature of Korra and Asami's relationship, but when Konietzko confirmed on his Tumblr that the two women fell in love he did assure fans that Nickelodeon worked with the creators to ensure the romance was as clear as possible.
"The more Korra and Asami’s relationship progressed, the more the idea of a romance between them organically blossomed for us. However, we still operated under this notion, another “unwritten rule,” that we would not be allowed to depict that in our show. But as we got close to finishing the finale, the thought struck me: how do I know we can’t openly depict that? No one ever explicitly said so. We approached the network and while they were supportive there was a limit to how far we could go with it."
While the creators did publicly state that "Korra and Asami fell in love", the ending of season 4 was subtle enough to appease network restrictions. But in this new comic, those restrictions won't exist.
So what does this mean for the comic? Hopefully, we'll see Korra and Asami just being a couple - going on dates, having cute in-jokes, and maybe even sharing intimate moments.
The Best Place For LoK
This seems like so little to ask, considering the fact that showing all of this is standard fair for heterosexual couples. But alas, that's the world we live in, and although cartoons are progressing in leaps and bounds, there's still a long way to go before non-heterosexual relationships are widely represented in media (especially children's programming).
Legend Of Korra has always leaned towards the more mature side of storytelling, with dark themes and sophisticated plots. With this in mind, developing the story further in a new comic will really free up the creators to do everything they wanted with the show, without those pesky network restrictions that sometimes hampered the storytelling. And I'm not just saying that because I want to see Korra and Asami finally kiss.
... OK, maybe I am.
