Ever since I was a kid, explosions in movies have fascinated me. It all started when my uncle showed me For Your Eyes Only when I was 4, and the harbor sequence was playing, in which a grenade sets off a giant explosion. I remember being in awe for ages, and wanting to see more. I'm 22 in less than a month, and I still act like an excited kid when big movie destruction plays out, it's just a glorious spectacle and while a lot of movies do tend to focus more on chaos than story, it will still probably blow my mind. So here are my top 10 movie explosions!

10. True Lies

Can't have an explosion list without mentioning at least one Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, his career of kickass characters have survived many blasts. In True Lies, Arnold plays agent Harry Tasker, and during the climax he escapes a missile attack by diving into water and escaping the fiery chaos. Best use of slow motion, James Cameron at his action directing best.

9. Face/Off

One of the greatest action films of the past few decades, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in career best roles, the action is on form here in this ridiculously enjoyable thriller. The boat chase finale is where things really get going as the fireworks set off. A boat crashes into another boat, launches mid air as the other boat explodes! Spectacular.

8. Bad Boys 2

That poor, poor mansion. Michael Bay proves himself the master of disaster and chaos, and watching this lovely mansion go up in a massive ball of smoke is awesome! Cut together from multiple viewpoints to capture every inch of the chaos, this deserves a spot in my list.

7. Speed

A bomb on a bus. If it drops below 50mph, it will explode. This film, one of my all time favorites, has a superb premise making for a 2 hour breakneck speed action adventure! The finale in which the bomb finally explodes is unparalleled in size, complete with a truly whopping fireball. It just goes to show how lucky the characters were to survive this!

6. Colombiana

Zoe Saldana, one of the most badass and coolest action stars working today, got her time to shine in 2011 revenge thriller Colombiana, and she convinces as a stone cold killer. The best moment sees Cataleya take on her target in a luscious villa that is turned to dust in no time when she unleashes an RPG assault. Olivier Megaton's fast cut style works terrifically with the assault.

5. The Expendables

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone shoot, drench in fuel and blow up a harbor filled with bad guys. I don't need to say anymore, the Expendables destroy henchmen after henchmen in the most awesome manner, and this moment is no exception.

4. Spectre

Bond really goes out with a bang in the 24th outing after his confrontation with Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of the organization Spectre. Destroying his base in tremendous style, 007 sets off a chain reaction that lasts for a good 20 seconds, just take in the massive scale of this takedown of an enemy base. This tops the helicopter/mansion explosion in Skyfall.

3. Transformers Dark Of The Moon

Another one from the man who knows how to turn one chunk of stuff into a thousand splintering chunks of stuff, this gloriously epic shot sees Rosie Huntington Whiteley's Carly stand in awe as an alien ships crash-lands and explodes behind her. This in 3D and slowed down is enough to make any action movie director green with envy!

2. Mad Max Fury Road

Once again, this explosion was done for real. Compositing different shots and footage of other vehicles, plus Tom Hardy swinging from a polecat created a final piece of cinematic awe, look no further than this big blast from 2015.

"Guzzoline!"

1. Transformers Age Of Extinction

Now this is how you do it! Get your cast to run away in slow motion from an exploding enemy grenade and let chaos ensue! The coolest thing about this part of the film was that this was done for real, it's in the movie B-roll. This on the big screen was a mind blowing moment, and at home, it still makes your jaw drop, Michael Bay you've done it again. It's pure spectacle, and just genuinely explosive.

And remember, if you're ever (and I hope you aren't) caught running from one of these gigantic explosions, be cool and don't look back.
