Gotham's second Season is halfway through, and if the remaining episodes are anything like the ones we have already seen, it's going to be an incredible spring for Jim Gordon and the gang.
Now, we've had some mid-season tidbits about what to expect in the near future for the city of Gotham, including some long-awaited villains and some more surprising additions to the cast.
Mr Freeze (Victor Fries) has been talked about since the show was first announced, but it took a solid season and a half to get a glimpse of the mad-scientist who can only survive inside his sub-zero suit.
We got our first look at Mr Freeze in the fall finale, but there's plenty more to come when Gotham resumes in February. In an interview with USA Today, Nathan Darrow (who plays Fries) spoke about how this long-awaited character will play out in the upcoming episodes.
Victor has one central intimate human connection, and that’s with his wife. There’s something really, really interesting and vulnerable and difficult about that. ... In some of the research I did on the character as he has evolved in the comic book, he has a more tenuous connection with humanity and his own humanity, and she’s it.
He’s pretty focused on what he’s doing. He is on a very special, independent project.
As for the freeze gun that we got a glimpse of, Darrow is keeping pretty quiet about it, but he does hint at some exciting things in the works.
OK, referencing my talking points verbatim … (Laughs) I will tell you we’re going to see Mr. Freeze do some things we have never seen him do.
Mr Freeze has also been teased in the latest Gotham promo...
Dr Hugo Strange
Another character who has been mentioned from the beginning is Dr Hugo Strange, the obsessive and evil psychiatrist with a personal vendetta against Batman. His bizarre experiments on humans are sure to come up in Gotham, and it looks like he won't be working on them alone.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, executive producer John Stevens spoke about Dr Strange, and how he will come into play in the second half of Season 2.
You won't have to wait long at all to see Hugo Strange. In fact, we'll be seeing him as soon as we come back in the New Year. We're going to see those two [Strange and Mr Freeze] end up working together as we go forward. Both of them will be at the heart of this mystery that our characters have been investigating since last year, about what is happening inside Wayne Enterprises and how that is connected to the death of the Waynes. We'll be tying those two characters into the core mystery of the show.
As Bruce inches closer to finding out who, exactly, is responsible for his parent's death, we got a particularly interesting little tidbit from Silver St Cloud in recent episodes; M Malone.
Now we know that M is indeed Matches Malone, a pyromaniac with a penchant for insurance fraud. Comicbook.com revealed that Michael Bowen will be joining the Gotham cast as Matches, and from his description, he may be more than an arsonist in this iteration.
One of Gotham's deadliest killers, Matches Malone is a weathered, philosophical hitman who may be the triggerman behind one of the most important crimes in Gotham's history.
The character isn't originally a major player in the Bat-verse, but Batman does use his identity to infiltrate the criminal underworld at times. Could we be about to see Bruce get a little closer to Gotham's gutters here? Or is this just a nod to another comic book name?
Finally, in the same interview where Dr Strange was mentioned, Stephens mentioned someone that fans have been wondering about ever since the beginning of this season, when the Order of Saint Dumas was first mentioned.
A lot of this goes back to the Batman lore. The Order of St. Dumas features pretty heavily into it. Anyone who is deeply involved in the Batman world knows the Order of St. Dumas is also the order of monks who created Azrael. That is sort of prefiguring where we're going to be going towards the end of the season, setting up certain ideas like proto-versions of what Batman might become. Bruce can start to see characters that are going to inform the costumed hero that he is going to be in the years to come. The Order of St. Dumas will almost provide a negative example which will guide him on a certain path.
Gotham is taking a long mid-season break, not returning to Fox until the end of February, but it seems that we are being set up for some incredible new villains to join the show when it does.
As well as Dr Strange, Mr Freeze, Matches Malone and (potentially) Azreal, we still have yet to see what the Galavans are going to do next, and of course, Ed Nygma's continuing journey into becoming a true killer (helped along by Penguin).
They weren't kidding with the Season 2 tagline: Return of the Villains!
