(Warning - the following contains plot speculation and possible SPOILERS for the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as a breakdown of the recently released mini-trailer. Proceed with whatever level of caution your innate SPOILER-aversion suggests is wise...)
When the latest trailer hit our screens during last night's episode of Gotham, Bat-fans the world over were understandably... let's say over-excited. After all, not only were we getting to watch a TV show about a young Jim Gordon fighting crime (something we should never let slip from our minds) but we also got to see an honest-to-goodness, straight-up, actual, factual clip from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Which was awesome.
The most intriguing part, though?
The New 'Batman v Superman' Trailer Might Just Reveal Something Super Important About Batman
First up, though, take another look at that bad boy for yourself. Don't worry, we'll wait.
So. Yeah. Still awesome. The key thing to note, though, is that the whole clip we just saw is pretty much guaranteed to be a dream sequence – unless, of course, Zack Snyder is inexplicably and improbably determined to piss off DC fans the world over, and has opted to go 'full Snyder,' with a rage-murdering Batman and evil Superman, which... won't happen... right?
The important, slightly less obvious thing hiding in there, though?
We Now Know Whose Dream Sequence That Is
Remember how, back in one of the earlier Batman v Superman trailers, we saw Batman fighting some dudes in the desert?
Something which, since he seemed to be breaking a bunch of dudes wearing Superman logos' necks, we all kind of assumed was probably part of a dream sequence - but couldn't be sure whether it was being dreamt by Batman, Superman, or even someone like Lex Luthor.
Well, now we finally know.
The new trailer, along with being broadly awesome, also included one key element. In amongst all the glaring...
...and Batman/Superman standoffs...
...something super-important happens. Specifically:
We See Batman Get Unmasked
Which is incredibly important for one key reason: Superman and Lex Luthor are unlikely to know that Batman is Bruce Wayne. Sure, they could have found it out somehow (presumably through bribery or laser vision respectively), but as things stand, it remains pretty implausible that they know Bruce is the Dark Knight.
Which means... what exactly? Well, most likely, that...
We've Been Watching Batman's Dreams
After all, what with Bruce being one of the movie's two titular leads, he seems the most likely person (who knows what Batman looks like under his cowl) to be given an extended dream sequence – suggesting that we've been watching the contents of the Bat-dreamscape this whole time.
Which, in turn, means we probably know exactly why Batman is going to try to take down Superman – and it's not (necessarily) because of the destruction of Metropolis. Instead, it seems that Batman's deep, dark fear is that that Superman will become a dictatorial conqueror of Earth, and that he will then not only force Batman to kill, but will then un-mask him.
Which, in fairness, is a pretty solid way to make sense of Batman's decision to attack a random space alien.
What do you think, though?
