What's something you never realized was missing from your life until now? If you answered: a mash up between Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Dragon Ball Z then worry no longer because a collaboration is on the way, but it's not quite what you may have expected...
YouTube game reviewer Angry Joe (of the Angry Joe Show which boasts a whopping 2,290,588 subscribers) is just one man with a plan, and a dream. And this particular dream involves bringing together 3 well loved video game (and anime) franchises to create a board game the likes of which has never been seen before.
"The three famous franchises that the game is based on, or the game uses, is Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and DRAGON BALL Z!"
Yep you read that right. There is nothing wrong with your computer screen. Do not attempt to adjust the picture.
So why these games? Well Angry Joe considers them to be not only "the best fighting games of all time", but also a staple of the childhoods of many of those now in their 20s and 30s, himself included. Which is a fair point to make, what child of the '80s or '90s hasn't played at least one of these games, or watched the Dragon Ball Z anime?
Angry Joe and his collaborators have drawn parallels between the gameplay specifics of the three franchises to create what he calls the Universal Tactics System. This system will allow cross compatibility with characters from Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat; players will be able to interact with each other via different series characters as part of the board game.
Joe remained pretty quiet about the details, but did let slip that he's currently in talks with "three really famous board game miniatures and CCG designers" as the game moves through the developmental stages. No names were dropped sadly, but that's something we can expect to hear more about in due course.
Unfortunately we're not yet sure of the gameplay particulars either, but we've been promised a formal product announcement sometime before the end of the month, as well as videos of the gameplay and development. All we really know is that it's supposedly a lot of fun as well as simple to play.
"People who I've played the game with just say 'Oh it's so fun, it simulates the video games but it offers more cause it can go up to six players, it's simple to learn, its got a lot of those 'ooh shit' moments.' So I cannot wait to show you more!"
The Kickstarter for the game is expected to go live in February 2016, when potential players will be able to put their money where their mouth is. Kickstarter details have still to be confirmed, so presumably we'll hear more about it at the formal announcement sometime this month.
