Raise your hand if you too are feeling the annoying phenomenon known as déjà vu when it comes to the repetitious conversation regarding women in film.
Well, Cate Blanchett feels it too. She wants us to just address these issues head on and get to fixing them straight away. She described it to GQ in the best way possible:
“We’ll be back here like Groundhog Day next year having the same fucking symposium. It just has to shift.”
In her Oscar acceptance speech for Blue Jasmine she reprimanded those in her industry who are “still foolishly clinging to the idea that female films with women at the center are niche experiences,” so now she’s constantly invited to symposiums on gender inequality in Hollywood. “It just feels like the industry has the same conversation every year and I think that’s a fabulous conversation,” she says. But also, kinda, enough.
Wouldn't it be nice to just tackle these issues head on and be able to move on to new things? When you become the face or leader of a cause, it must get annoying to have to repeat yourself over and over again and have no resolution.
While sipping on her third martini, Blanchett also shared a story about the overpopulation of feral cats and the issues northwest Australia is having with bushfires.
Imagine being caught between a wildfire and a—
"A feral cat, yeah." Cate Blanchett grins, raises her eyebrows. "That's what it's like being an actor. It's terrible."
I can't explain how refreshing this incredibly real lady is. Let's hope these issues get fixed right away so we can move onto other topics! The redundancy is getting really, really old.
