I started watching horror movies when I was five years old. I watch all types of movies, but I have always felt at home with the the horror genre. The horror genre has gone through so many changes throughout the years. Going back to the old monster movies, introducing the slasher flick, creature features, zombies, and found footage films. I recently saw a documentary called Why Horror?, by Tal Zimerman. This documentary follows Tal as he tries to understand why people love horror films.
This led me to ask myself why I love horror. It's a question that most horror fans always get. This also leads to a lot of misconceptions towards horror fans. Most people don't see how great horror fans really are. I read these two great articles by Taylor Krauss aka Taylor Terrible, titled 5 Common Misconceptions About Horror Fans and 7 Reasons Why You Should Fall in Love with a Horror Fan. These articles perfectly described the usual ideas some people have about horror fans and on the other hand, how amazing horror fans truly are, I highly recommend giving them a read. I feel like my love for horror has evolved over time. at a young age it was more of a curiosity, a fear of the unknown. Now I look for more realistic and terrifying scares, I want to be scared. I love going to the theater, getting snacks, choosing my seat, and waiting for the lights to dim. It's an experience I have loved since I was young.
I think the horror genre has some of the greatest fans. Ever since I joined Moviepilot I have met so many horror fans that love horror as much as I do. Besides Sci-fi and Comics, horror is the only other film genre that has yearly conventions. Fans have even gathered for more recent zombie walks. It's a great community to be a part of. There is no concrete answer as to why we love horror, I think it's different for everyone. Some films give you an adrenaline rush and some leave you on edge even after you are done seeing it. I love going to see a horror movie in theaters and hearing people scream throughout the film. With all the different sub-genres in horror, creature features, slasher, supernatural, etc. there is something for everybody. horror films have taken almost every situation and holiday and made them terrifying. Camping, swimming, babysitting, and even Christmas now have a horrifying story. I love that there are always different types of horror films being released, keeping the fear going. Even when scared, there is something that draws you to horror films. Like I said before there is no simple explanation as to why I love horror. It has always been part of who I am.
