Stop the presses and get your large pinches of salt at the ready, because there's a new rumor afoot regarding the fate of the Justice League Dark in the DCEU and it's pretty interesting if true.
So I reckon the vast majority of people will be familiar in some way shape or form with the work of Ron Perlman. A close and long-time collaborator of Spanish horror legend Guillermo del Toro, Perlman is no stranger to prosthetic make up from both his turn in Beauty and the Beast as half-man, half-beast Vincent and the titular character in graphic novel adaptation Hellboy (and the sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army).
Most recently however was his performance as patriarch Clarence "Clay" Morrow in Kurt Sutter's massively popular television series Sons of Anarchy, which ended a critically acclaimed seven season run almost exactly this time last year. But rumour has it that Perlman is being courted to take a turn in the prosthetics again as part of the Justice League Dark.
Justice League Dark
We all know the New 52 Justice League by now - Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Superman - and we can expect to see them coming to the big screen in 2017 for Justice League Part One.
But what of the Justice League Dark?
Well just as the name suggests, the Justice League Dark are the mirror side of the Justice League. They're still heroes, just less marketable. Probably not ones you'd invite round for dinner, unless you like your dinners with a side order of the supernatural and volatile.
The Justice League Dark are the team set with handling the more supernatural situations, and originally consisted of the magicians John Constantine and Zatanna, the mystic fortune teller Madame Xanadu, the ghost Deadman and the reality altering Shade the Changing Man. Like the Justice League various heroes have come and went from the team over the years, including big names like Swamp Thing, Pandora and even Frankenstein.
So back in 2012 there was a Justice League Dark film in the works with the aforementioned Guillermo del Toro attached, entitled Dark Universe. It was set to feature Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman and Zatanna as members of the team, with other characters still to be confirmed.
Production was supposed to start on Dark Universe following del Toro's most recent release, Crimson Peak, the script was completed by the end of 2014, and expected to form part of the DC Extended Universe with del Toro directing. But following internal reshuffling in Warner Bros it was recently reported that del Toro is no longer attached to the project, and we haven't heard much of anything since.
But even if del Toro has left the building it doesn't mean we're not getting a Dark Universe / Justice League Dark movie, and that's where the Ron Perlman rumour comes into play as he's reportedly been put forward for the role by his friend Guillermo del Toro.
As a casting choice it works though, few actors have the experience and physicality to portray somebody like Swamp Thing, not quite human, not quite plant, not quite sure where he stands in the world. And we've even got some concept mock ups of how Perlman would look as Swamp Thing courtesy of the awesome BossLogic.
