I am a personal fan of tattoos. Even though I have yet to get inked, I view the body as an empty canvas with the possibility of beautiful, black, white, colored, portrait, Japanese, American traditional, and even more styles, of art that tell a story.

Some tattoos are serious tattoos that honor a loved one. Others are silly ones. I remember watching a tattoo show and a recently turned lactose intolerant man got a tattoo of various cheeses as a tribute to his old favorite food.

Celebrities are no different, as many have multiple works of art splayed across their beautiful bodies. Below is a list of (number) celebrities who are inked and looking as stunning as ever.

1. Angelina Jolie

One of Jolie's most famous tattoos is the Buddhist inscription for Protection meant in honor of her son, Maddox. It was done in Traditional Thai style, in which long needles were pushed into the skin by hand. The tattoo artist is the famous Noo Sompong Kanhphaiin, who chants hymns as he works.

He also did the Bengal tiger on Jolie's back in 2004. She was said to have been kneeling in prayer while getting the tattoo done, as it is part of the ritual's procedure. It translates to: “May your enemies run away from you. If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always. Your beauty will be that of Apsara. Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve & protect you, surrounding you on all sides.”

2. Miley Cyrus

Miley's first tattoo is "Just Breathe" placed just under her left breast. This tattoo stands as a tribute to her friend Vanessa and her grandfather who passed from lung disease.

Miley says:

"It reminds me not to take things for granted. I mean breathing—that was something none of them could do, the most basic thing. And I put it near my heart because that’s where they’ll always be."

How touching!

3. David Beckham

Hottie David Beckham has been with his hottie wife Victoria for 16 years now. For their sixth wedding anniversary, the couple got matching Sanskrit tattoos. They translate to: "I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine." This is one couple who is doing it right.

4. Rihanna

Rihanna received a butchered traditional Maori design which was applied with a hammer and chisel. After feeling dissatisfied with it, she called up her tattooing buddy, Bang Bang, who is based in New York. He came up with this design that is more sleek and fitting to her beautiful hands. It is a mehndi/henna-inspired tattoo that is placed on the back of her hand as well as above her wrist.

A beautiful tattoo for such a beautiful lady.

5. Travis Barker

Chuey Quintanar, Franco Vescovi, and Mister Cartoon are all famous for doing black and grey tattoos. Barker made the right choice when he went with these masters to get his head tattooed.

It took him from 30-35 hours to finish. Barker purposely has a lot of tattoos, as he never wanted to have a normal job. By getting many tattoos, he knew he'd have to make it as a musician regardless.

6. Adam Levine

Adam Levine's most recent tattoo is of a black bead necklace that he got done while in Japan. Levine admits:

“I was in Japan and I got this necklace. I’m not sure why I got it—I think I was bored. But I like it.”

7. Megan Fox

Megan Fox's most famous tattoo is the one of Marilyn Monroe's face, which was done by Mark Mahoney in Los Angeles. He is also the tattoo artist responsible for some of Fred Durst and Angelina Jolie's pieces.

Fox's tattoo of Marilyn has already been fading, so she decided to get it removed. Megan explains:

"I started reading about her and realized that her life was incredibly difficult. It's like when you visualize something for your future. I didn't want to visualize something so negative. She wasn't powerful at the time. She was sort of like Lindsay. She was an actress who wasn't reliable, who almost wasn't insurable.... She had all the potential in the world, and it was squandered. I'm not interested in following in those footsteps."

8. Danny Trejo

Badass Danny Trejo has a sick chest tattoo which features a woman wearing a sombrero. What you might not know is that he began the tattoo while in Folsom prison, and finished it in San Quentin during the two year span when Trejo was in solitary confinement.

9. The Rock

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Samoan tribal tattoo is a memorial for his family.

The patterns on the sleeve are meant to represent many different things. For example, coconut leaves or niu refers to a Samoan Chief Warrior, a Sun for good fortune, others tribute O lo’u to’a (wife), Dany, and his lo’u afafine (daughter), Simone Alexandra, can be seen crawling to the chest. Next to his heart are descending swirls of past, present, and future. This tattoo transforms into two eyes called “O Mata E Lua” to represent his ancestors watching over him. The Great Eye is a symbol that is meant to grant the wearer the spirit of the enemy, and also included is a broken face marked with shark teeth, which symbolizes his strength and struggles. Also peppered on his body are stones of achievement and abundance, standing as the foundation of life, and finally a tortoise shell to deflect evil spirits.

Who knew such a gorgeous, elaborate tattoo would hold that much meaning?

I must not be the only person itching to get inked. Just seeing all these gorgeous tattoos makes me want to get tatted up!

I'll have to make sure my stories are just as amazing as theirs.
