Relationships can be much more of a tumultuous affair than fairy tales would lead us to believe. But when two people support and nurture each other through the good, bad and the ugly, hopefully they have the opportunity to live happily ever after.
This couldn't be more true of the union between country music singer Keith Urban and his Oscar-winning wife Nicole Kidman.
The couple married in 2006 and only three months later Urban checked into the Betty Ford Center for alcohol and drug addition.
The country singer was launching the "Keith Urban So Far..." retrospective in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this week and spoke about his life and the struggles he was able to overcome because of the relationship with his beautiful wife.
In his speech he spoke of how Nicole had saved him "from the fire" and helped him "move into the light" by getting him the care he needed.
"In so many ways, it was the most powerful act of love in reaching into the fire and pulling me out, because she believed in me, and she saw something in me in such a way that she risked everything, everything, to trust me and pull me out of the fire, and let me then do the right thing and move into the light,"
He goes on to say...
"I didn't know (anything) about it until I met my wife. I didn't know anything about love. I didn't know anything about marriage. I didn't know anything about self sacrifice. I didn't know anything about taking care of a woman. Nothing. I took hostages. I didn't have relationships. I took hostages."
He then finishes with a direct and heartwarming thank you to Kidman.
"Nicole, God bless you for coming in and seeing something in me, that I may never have seen, but certainly if I ever had, I had long lost sight of that person. And you saw that and you gave me a chance, and I thank you enormously for that."
The heartfelt speech was a beautiful acknowledgement of Nicole Kidman's strength, love and virtue and left us all with the feeling that maybe love does conquer all.
