When it comes to horror movies we are introduced to monsters and villains of all shapes and sizes. Whether our protagonist is faced with a cannibal family, zombies, or an evil ghost there is always one villain that is scarier than them all--Mom. But why can Mom be so scary? How does making her the villain often work so well? There is something extra terrifying about the person that is supposed to be our caretaker becoming the taker of life instead of the giver.

Here are the top 10 scariest movie moms

(Spoilers Ahead)

10. Debbie Salt/Mrs. Loomis: 'Scream 2'

"No. I'm very sane."
"No. I'm very sane."

Debbie Salt's big reveal at the end of Scream 2 solidified her to be just as crazy as her son Billy. In fact, she's even crazier and more dangerous than her son. She is seeking revenge and she will kill anyone in her way to get to Sidney! Check her out in action below:

9. Peyton Flanders: 'The Hand That Rocks The Cradle'

"...is the hand that rules the world"
"...is the hand that rules the world"

The seemingly perfect nanny Peyton flanders is anything but that. Peyton flanders infiltrates a family and attempts to destroy it from within to seek revenge and to claim it as her own. Check out Peyton's terror in the trailer below:

8. Vera Cosgrove: 'Dead Alive'

"Come to Mama..."
"Come to Mama..."

I wouldn't necessarily say that Vera Cosgrove was only scary after she turned into a giant zombie monster... she was a bit terrifying even when she was "normal." As a human Vera was obsessed with having the picture perfect household. As the monster, she just wants her boy to "come back to Mama." And by come back to Mama, I mean she wants to actually put him back inside her. Ew. Check out Vera's zombie madness below:

7. Mother: 'Goodnight Mommy'

"I am your Mommy."
"I am your Mommy."

Now, before everything is revealed to us, Mother is pretty terrifying. Her movements aren't quite human, she walks naked in the woods, she's mean to one of her sons and she eats cockroaches. Normal right? Not so much. Check her out in the terrifying tailer to the movie below:

6. Amelia: 'The Babadook'

You can bring me the boy.
You can bring me the boy.

Don't get me wrong, The Babadook itself is pretty scary in this movie. But as the movie progresses Amelia reveals that she is much scarier than any monster her family may or may not be running from. Check her out in all her scary glory in the trailer:

5. Mama: 'Mama'

"A mother's love is forever."
"A mother's love is forever."

I didn't think that I would find this movie that scary, but I was wrong! Mama was terrifying. Not knowing her ghostly intentions or exactly what she was going to do with the family made her all the more unnerving. Check out the trailer below, if you dare:

4. Mrs. Voorhees: 'Friday the 13th'

You see, Jason was my son, and today is his birthday...
You see, Jason was my son, and today is his birthday...

Mother of Jason, the original killer of Camp Crystal Lake.... pretty scary stuff! Mrs. Voorhees is a classic and will always be one the scariest Mom's out there. Check out one of her most famous scenes below:

3. Norman/Norma Bates: 'Psycho'

"Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly..."
"Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly..."

What's scarier? The fact that Norma Bates is just a skeleton in her son's basement? OR the fact that he has created an alternate personality of hers and is killing women in their hotel? Either way, creepy stuff. Whether it's through Norman's thoughts or not, Norma is scary as hell. Check "her" out in this creepy clip below:

2. Margaret White: 'Carrie'

I can see your dirty pillows. Everyone will.
I can see your dirty pillows. Everyone will.

Margaret White is the true villain of this movie, and its the stuff of nightmares. Abusive, psychotic and extreme, Margaret White may not actually kill anyone, but she's the root cause of Carrie's problems. Check her out below:

1. Deborah Logan: 'The Taking of Deborah Logan'

The story of Alzheimers is never about one person.
The story of Alzheimers is never about one person.

Poor Deborah. She's suffering from Alzheimers AND she's possessed. When I saw this movie I didn't expect the story to go where it did. The more Deborah is taken, the more terrifying she becomes. The part that is most terrifying is that you don't want he to be harmed or harm others, but you know its inevitable. Check her out below:
