Check out our podcast here if you want to hear us talk about it:
After her fight with Red Tornado, Kara is drained of her powers and is forced to live like a normal human until she gets them back. After being sent home by Cat due to having a cold, Kara is met by Jimmy outside of the building. As he tells her about Superman having an ability called the "Solar Flare" which drains him of his powers for 48 hours, earthquakes begin to shake the city. Kara breaks her arm after being pushed out of the way of a speeding vehicle, by Jimmy. They head back to Catco and thanks to Winn are able to get the cable back up. Lord uses the opportunity to bash Supergirl and her absence, saying that if she can not show up to help the people, he would. Winn goes to help Cat set up her own broadcast, while Jimmy and Kara go to confront Lord. Kara tells Lord that the people need a symbol of hope, which Supergirl is, to get through these tough times. He reveals that he knows she lost her powers, and that she may never get them back. The three rush to save a man who is fatally wounded, but are too late. Kara begins to lose confidence in herself, being unable to stop what is happening around the city. Jimmy tells her that even superheroes can't save everyone, not even her Superman. Right across the street a hold up is happening and Kara dresses up as Supergirl to try to stop it. She successfully gets the man to hand over his gun and Jimmy photographs the moment. She realizes she doesn't need to have powers to be a hero. At the same time Cat goes on air to tell the people not to give up hope on Supergirl and in themselves. Back at the DEO, Alex and Hank are having to deal with one of the inmates named Jemm who has escaped due to the earthquakes. One of Jemm's powers is psychokinesis, or the ability to control minds. Though Alex is the most knowledgeable person there in dealing with these aliens, Hank orders her to stay put, and heads out with two agents. They are attacked by Jemm, but Hank is nowhere to be found. When he returns alone, Alex and Agent Donovan begin to question what it is Hank is up to. Alex and Donovan head out after Hank and they find that he lied about what happened to the other agents. Jemm shows up and takes over Donovan, but he is able to fight him off long enough for Alex to get away. Hank finds Alex and scolds her for disobeying orders. Alex takes this chance to tell him that she knows about him and her father. She demands to know what really happened and tells Hank to handcuff himself, so that she can talk to him after she deals with Jemm. She confronts Jemm, but is then cornered, until Hank shows up and kills him. Back at Catco, Winn walks in on Kara and Jimmy embracing. He tells her that her powers will be restored if she could get some sort of Kryptonian adrenaline rush. As he walks away, she tries to tell him that what he saw was not what it looked like and he leaves crushed. Another earthquake hits and they get a call from people in the upper floors of the building, who are stuck there due to the elevator being broken.Kara, Winn and Jimmy work together to save them and are successful in doing so. The rope the Jimmy his holding on to however snaps, and he begins to fall down the elevator shaft. Kara's powers are restored and she is able to save Jimmy and then the whole city. Meanwhile, the DEO is fixing all the damage left by the earthquake and Jemm, while Alex talks to Hank. Hank explains that the reason he was able to break out of the metal handcuffs and then have enough strength to take out a super alien like Jemm was because he was not Hank Henshaw. The real Hank died on the mission with Jeremiah. He reveals himself to be the last son of Mars, J'onn J'onzz a.k.a Martian Manhunter. He was the alien the real Hank Henshaw and her father Jeremiah went out to apprehend. Jeremiah realized that J'onn was not a threat and gave his life to protect him. All he asked was for J'onn to look after Alex as if she were his own daughter. So he used his shape shifting abilities to assume the identity of Hank Henshaw and put on an act, so that he could watch Alex closely and protect her. Kara meets with Cat and thanks her for restoring people's hope in her own way and flies away. She is then attacked by two Kryptonians who bring her to Astra, saying that they have unfinished business.
Since Kara didn't
have her powers for most of the episode, most of the action we see is
more on the DEO's side. We also have a lot of destruction going on
around the city, which Kara could not stop unfortunately. Here's some notable scenes.
Jemm: In the comics he is the monarch ruler of Saturn who is actually an ally to the Martian Manhunter. Here, he is one of the inmates from Fort Rozz who has super strength, invulnerability and his most notable power, psychokinesis. This enables him to go into people's minds and control them. He was also able to shoot energy beams from it.
J'onn J'onzz / Martian Manhunter: The last son of Mars, who had been saved by Jeremiah Danvers. He assumed Hank Henshaw's identity to fulfill his promise to Jeremiah and watch over Alex. He has the same abilities as Kara and Superman, but can also shape shift. Though we haven't seen it yet we can assume that he has telepathic abilities which helped him in fighting Jemm from getting into his mind.
Team Supergirl- They may have some problems with each other in their personal lives, but they still saved people even without Kara's powers. Now they know all they need is strong will and courage to get the job done.
Kara and Winn- There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing Winn being the third wheel. We can see that Kara has an interest in Jimmy, but like Winn said, he's with Lucy now. Open your eyes Kara, don't be the one to turn WInn over to the bad side. He's got daddy issues, with his father being the Toyman, and he will only be able to take so much until he gives up. Despite seeing her hugging Jimmy, he put that aside to help them save the people trapped in the upper levels of Catco. He also dedicated some of his time to finding out more on how she could have her powers restored. Why can't Winn get any of the love?! It was sad to hear him say that he always proud of Supergirl, but was disappointed in Kara before walking away.
Kara and Alex- With Kara not having their powers, Alex tries everything to help her regain them. They were both on edge about Hank and the story behind their father's disappearance. They both had to deal with a lot this episode and most of it was without each other.
Kara and Jimmy- This time we see Jimmy being the hero and having to save Kara. That did however result in her breaking her arm and him nearly falling to his death in an elevator shaft. They shared a pretty touching moment before Winn walked in and man was that harsh to see play out.
Kara and Lord- This guy acts like he knows it all. I mean he sort of does, but he must have felt stupid after seeing Supergirl fly in at the last moment and save the day. Despite using some big words and sharing his knowledge about super humans Kara stood her ground and defended what Supergirl stood for.
Kara and Cat- Their interaction was brief, but I had to put it in here. It was super funny and adorable. Then we have the meeting of Supergirl and Cat at the end and it seems like they have established some mutual respect for each other.
Hank/J'onn J'onnz and Alex- I really thought that Hank was going to just snap this episode and show his true evil nature. Nope. The plot twist of all plot twists plays out and you find out he's Martian Manhunter. We were screaming at the top of our lungs at this reveal. Right when you think you know everything....BOOOM... they hit you with something really crazy! His whole demeanor changed in an instant and so did his body. Alex was just as shocked as we were. That guy is huge as hell. Amazing.
Cat and Winn- She didn't even know that he worked there, poor guy. She called him Witt, Wick, everything, but his name and even bossed him around to doing things. They did achieve something together though and they helped people not lose hope in Supergirl.
Kara and Alura- Another brief interaction, but it still counts. Her hologram mother couldn't do to much other than tell her to be patient and what for her powers to come back.
Sector 12- Sector 12 was one of 3600 sectors into which the Guardians of the Universe had divided the universe. Each sector was assigned one, and later two, members of the Green Lantern Corps, who were responsible for its safety and well being. The same system was later used by the other Lantern corps of the emotional spectrum, including the Sinestro Corps. This was one of the parts of the DEO where Jemm was thought to be hiding.
What's to Come/Theories:
Next week is the mid season finale for this show and it looks like we're a getting a showdown between Kara and her aunt. Hopefully Kara won't have to go at it alone and will get help from the newly revealed Martian Manhunter. I know he doesn't want Kara to know, but how long can Alex and J'onn keep this a secret? It's going to be hard to match this episode and moving forward this show has opened up a whole lot of possibilities.
Out of all the DCTV shows reveals, this one easily takes the damn cake. I wish we had elaborated on the whole Martian Manhunter theory we had mentioned back when the show started in thisarticle
,but hey it was still amazing to watch. This is our favorite Supergirl episode so far, and they are definitely heading in the right direction. What did you guys think about this episode? Leave it in the comments below, we'd love to read them!
