Let’s pretend. Common words heard by every adult and probably uttered as young children. “Let’s Pretend” starts the most magnificent moment of imagination that anyone knows.
As a child, my brother and I, would play this game on a regular basis. Always pretending to be our favorite superhero. We were big fans. I would always choose the Hulk, because he is the strongest there is…his words not mine. My brother would choose Spider-man, no doubt because he was funny, could avoid danger with his spider senses and could climb walls. We would then decide if we were having a team-up against Dr. Doom or if we were battling one another, as Spidey and the Hulk often did.
This “let’s pretend” idea did not end for me once I became an adult, instead it grew and grew. Imagination is the base foundation of any illustration that I do. In a small way I’m pretending to be the character I illustrate. Spending a few hours, as I draw, to put on their costume and pretend that I am fighting crime, lifting a tank or climbing and jumping skyscrapers.
Did you lose that “Let’s pretend” part of you as you grew, probably a bit. But it is never too late to revisit the worlds of your imagination and reenergize the land of make believe. Just join me for a moment and “Let’s pretend”.
