Orphan Black never stops delivering the thrills and twists to keep us on the edge of our seat, and Season 3 did not break from the tradition. The finale was satisfying but intriguing: many loose ends were tied up, the Clone Club dinner scene was touching, but shocking moments like Delphine's apparent murder kept us guessing until the last minute.
Although it's still a long way off, the writers have teased plenty of plot points for Season 4, so we're already getting excited for the continuation of the story. Orphan Black Season 4 will contain plenty of twists and revelations. Recently, the BBC released a synopsis that hints at big changes for Sarah, while the cast and crew spilled story secrets to Indiewire...
Back To The Beginning
It seems as though the showrunners want to return to the dynamic of Season 1, weaving a mystery arc through the episodes and most importantly, featuring Sarah investigating on her own.
According to the synopsis, it seems as though Sarah is already trying to finally have a settled life with Kira and Cal, who took his daughter to Iceland in Season 3 in order to protect them both. But Sarah's attempt at domestic bliss is short lived...
"Season 4 of the drama will see leader-of-the-pack, Sarah, reluctantly return home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive and mysterious ally tied to the clone who started it all — Beth Childs.
Sarah will follow Beth’s footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, heading in a horrifying new direction. Under constant pressure to protect the sisterhood and keep everyone safe, Sarah’s old habits begin to resurface.
As the close-knit sisters are pulled in disparate directions, Sarah finds herself estranged from the loving relationships that changed her for the better."
As Beth was the first to investigate Dyad, Neolutionism, and the Prolethians, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about her story. It looks like Season 4 will show Sarah chasing Beth's shadow again, leading to more revelations.
The synopsis also implies that Sarah may drift away from her clone sisters while she throws herself into this new investigation. The "old habits" are also intriguing: this is clearly a reference to Sarah's past, but whether the habits are stealing, doing cons, or something darker that hasn't yet been revealed. Intriguing!
Going from duplicitous monitor, to scientist girlfriend, to ruthless Dyad boss, Delphine's development has been fascinating to watch. She's always been one of the more morally ambiguous characters, though underneath it all we were sure that her love for Cosima and compassion for the clones was her ultimate redeeming feature. Killing her off at the end of Season 3 seems like a vicious move on the part of the writers... so did she really die?
Proclaiming her "Orphan Black dead", creator Graeme Manson has coyly teased Delphine's possible return before. In his most recent interview with Indiewire, Manson yet again dropped hints that Delphine might not be as dead as we expected.
"Where did she get hit? In the liver? I'm not sure that's fatal…"
Earlier on though, co-creator John Fawcett revealed to Entertainment Weekly how Delphine's death is crucial to Cosima's development in Season 4.
"[Delphine's death] was a necessary move to make. And its necessary in Cosima’s story and it’s necessary going forward in subsequent seasons—in Season 4 and Season 5."
So what is the truth? The showrunners certainly like to play with our emotions, but it's true that Delphine's "death" scene was far from conclusive.
Hmm... well, at least we don't have long now to find out!
Orphan Black Season 4 premieres sometime in the spring of 2016 on BBC America. What would you like to see happen? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
