In the aftermath of the second [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) trailer's release, fans are desperate to understand all the hidden hints that reveal part of the film's plot. The desert sequence is still the most hotly contested scene in the movie, and the new trailer only cast further doubt on the issue.
Is it a dream? Is it a prophetic vision? Or is Bruce just having a bad trip? We just don't know, but the crew of Batman v Superman certainly do, and one of them is only too ready to share the secret...
Costume designer Michael Wilkinson recently sat down with WeGotThisCovered to discuss his design choices for Dawn Of Justice and future DC films. And he may have just answered those burning fan questions about the desert sequence...
"Zack [Snyder] had a great idea of this sort of nightmare-ish vision, almost a vision of the future, a post-apocalyptic vision. It’s like a dream that Ben [Affleck] has, so we wanted to, it has almost a Mad Max quality to it where it’s like the end of the world, trying to survive."
Many fans theorized the fight in the desert was part of a nightmare on Bruce Wayne's part, mostly because Superman really isn't the type to have cultish soldiers. The second trailer also hinted at this, as Supes seems ready to torture Bruce...
All this does feed into the idea that Bruce is very concerned about the impact Superman will have on Earth, to the point where this worry haunts his dreams. So far so good, it makes a lot of sense. But what about that Darkseid hint?
Darkseid: The Thanos Of DC?
The second trailer extended the footage of the desert scene, giving us a glimpse of some strange, bug-like, winged creatures. Fans soon identified these as Parademons, the soldiers of Darkseid, and it certainly seemed as though DC were dropping a hint of another big bad villain just waiting to wreck havoc. With Doomsday revealed as Dawn Of Justice's big bad, it's unlikely Darkseid will show up in person in this film. But this sequence could herald his arrival into the narrative at a later date... perhaps in Justice League Part One?
If DC really are trying to lay hints for a future villain's entrance into the franchise, this suggests the desert sequence is a legitimately prophetic vision of the future. But Wilkinson had more to say about the scene, and his comments cast the Parademons theory into doubt...
"Then of course Superman and his minions come, so it’s sort of a way of representing the amazing amounts of, the sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has about the threat of Superman."
Are the winged creatures Superman's dream minions? It's possible, and what Wilkinson says definitely points towards this dream sequence showing Bruce's concerns through symbolism. In this way, it's hard to see anything Bruce dreams about as an actual prediction of the future. He hasn't got psychic powers after all, and if the sequence is just supposed to show his obsession with Superman, then why would Bruce see the minions of a completely different character that he knows nothing about?
Ah, the questions never stop with Batman vs Superman, but at least we know for sure that this sequence IS a dream, not the real climactic battle of the film. One mystery down, approx. 1 million to go!
Do you believe what Wilkinson says? Or is the sequence hinting at Darkseid's arrival? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
