Death on The Walking Dead comes in every shape and size imaginable. In the past five and a half seasons, we've seen dozens of different ways for characters have been killed off. Psychotic survivors, gunfire, disease, suicide, child birth and, of course, zombies have claimed countless lives, some in very tragic and memorable ways. Thinking about all the past deaths on TWD, a question popped into my mind: If I were on the show, how would I want to die?
Earlier this month I represented MoviePilot at the Walker Stalker Convention: New York/ New Jersey where fans can meet some of their favorite cast members from Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) to Jon Bernthal (Shane) and even Norman Reedus (Daryl). And I was lucky enough to ask some of the cast and former cast members: If you could choose how to die on the show, how would you want to die?
Alexandra Breckenridge - Jessie Anderson
Cause of Death: N/A (Still Alive) - Death of Choice: Killed by a friend
"Well that’s a hard question because I guess the most wonderful way to go is to be eaten, right? But I don’t really want to be eaten so…. maybe shot or stabbed? I mean nobody wants to die on the show. But I think it would be cool if it was by somebody you knew because then it means you did something bad."
Brighton Sharbino - Lizzie Samuels
Cause of Death: Executed by Carol - Death of Choice: Sacrificing herself for others
"I probably would wanna do something different that’s not a very common death. Um… taking one for the team or something. There would be something like it was everyone against me and I would go out like a hero."
Chad Coleman - Tyreese Williams
Cause of Death: Bit by walkers - Death of Choice: No change
"Just like that. Exactly. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. That was my experience when I read the script. I was like ‘Bulls eye! That’s it! Let’s go!” He went through a range of emotions and the way he died was gentle. I thought that it encapsulated everything that Tyreese was about."
Corey Brill - "Porch D***" Pete Anderson
Cause of Death: Executed by Rick - Death of Choice: Alcohol Poisoning
"Sex. No I’m just kidding. But seriously I think I would want it to be something where I didn’t know that it happened. I don’t know if that’s possible. We’re talking about Pete here so…. alcohol poisoning."
Me - “Just drink yourself into a stupor?”
Daniel Bonjour - Aiden Monroe
Cause of Death: Eaten by walkers after being impaled on metal bars from a grenade explosion - Death of Choice: Anything that is memorable
"Honestly I would not want to die, obviously. I would do something where I lived for a few more episodes dying in bed. But honestly I loved the way I went. Maybe I would have liked to have saved some people like Deanna. Like going out swinging, taking out some people would have been cool. But going out epic is the way you wanna go and so being remembered as a really gruesome death is all I can really ask for."
IronE Singleton - Theodore Douglas a.k.a. T-Dog
Cause of Death: Eaten by walkers saving Carol - Death of Choice: Heroically saving another person
"That’s it. That’s the only way i would have wanted to go out: Heroically. You wanna go out having your mark on this planet when you leave so if you’re gonna go out, why not go out saving somebody… Preferably it’s a good person, you know? I want it to be worth it. I don’t wanna save someone that’s going to go on and cause harm to other people. Like this last episode with Morgan [and the wolf]. Morgan did his best to save him, got into the fight with Carol and you saw what happened… I would prefer it not to be somebody like that."
Jane McNeil - Patricia
Cause of Death: Killed by walkers trying to escape the farm - Death of Choice: Gunfight
"A shoot out. A really crazy shootout would have been fun. You know shooting walkers, shooting the enemies. This season would have been the wolves or that season would have been the Governor’s people. I wanted Patricia to actually get a chance to fight at some point and she really didn’t get a chance to."
Katelyn Nacon - Enid
Cause of Death: N/A (Still Alive) - Death of Choice: Something heroic and gruesome
"Something heroically but in the end I want a big chunk of her face to be ripped out. Like maybe you can see the eye ball coming out, something really gruesome. That’s a good way to go. Then people are like “EEEWWW!!!” But at least it wasn’t like “oh she got bit and she slowly died” - that’s no fun! I would rather a chunk taken out of my face."
Kyla Kenedy - Mika Samuels
Cause of Death: Killed by Lizzie - Death of Choice: Saving another person
"I’ve been asked this question once and after I have thought about it I really think I would rather have died saving another character. I think Mika’s death meant something on the show and I think that every character’s death means something. I think I went off in a great way as well. It was really upsetting but if I had to [choose] probably saving another character."
Madison Lintz - Sophia Peletier
Cause of Death: Bit by a walker/ Zombified Sophia shot by Rick after leaving the barn - Death of Choice: Revolving Door of Doom (Noah's death in episode 5.14 "Spend")
"I don’t know because if you have to go that’s a pretty cool way [referring to her own death on the show]. Maybe something really gory like getting eaten. OH! I know which one! The revolving door! That’s how I would wanna go! I mean, you’re in a glass box and you’re getting eaten and people are watching you, that’s pretty cool!"
Michael Rooker - Merle Dixon
Cause of Death: Shot by The Governor/ Zombified Merle stabbed by Daryl - Death of Choice: No Change
"That’s the way I would go. I think the sequence we chose was a great way to go out."
Michael Traynor - Nicholas
Cause of Death: Suicide (shot himself after being trapped by walkers) - Death of Choice: Same way but more heroically
Everyone wants to go out in a big heroic blaze of glory but as a fan of television and as a fan of the show, I think [Nicolas’ death] was one of the more memorable storylines of the past few seasons. And it’s pretty exciting to be part of that moment of television... I wish I could have kicked some more butt on the way up to the dumpster, you know? Maybe taken a few more out. There’s a huge swath of walkers in Nicolas’s path but alas that wasn’t the case. You can’t suddenly “Rambo out” but that’s all. I would have loved to have had that one moment of going through a sea of walkers.
Scott Wilson - Hershel Greene
Cause of Death: Decapitated by The Governor/ Zombified head stabbed by Michonne - Death of Choice: No Change
"I would have chosen not to die. But if you have to die I guess that’s a good a way as any. It was dramatic, it played a big impact. What can I say, one bad hit and you’re off the show…. That was fine the way it was."
Tovah Feldshuh - Deanna Monroe
"Technical" Cause of Death: Bit by walker and presumably devoured by walkers later - Death of Choice: Devoured by walkers saving Rick and the others
"I would have wanted not to die, that would have been by first choice. But just remember, you didn’t see me die, you saw me only getting bitten. So keep that in mind. I thought of another idea, my jumping out of the window to be devoured by a sea of walkers. Distracting them so that Rick and his gang could escape with their meat covered ponchos. I thought that would have been great."
Personally, one of the aspects of TWD that keeps me hooked season after season is how emotionally invested I become in these characters. You can't help but hold your breath or scream at the screen when one of your favorites is in peril and feel overwhelming excitement when he or she survives against all odds. As other fans can concur, seeing some of these characters die really rocked me to my core (BETH!!!!).
Thus far, season six has only had a handful of big name deaths (Deanna, Nicholas and Eastman - if he counts). With the looming threat of Negan and the current danger of the walkers inside Alexandria, the second half of the season is bound to bring the the end to another fan favorite. February 14th cannot come any sooner...
