Now, controversial as it is, there's certainly something to be said for method acting. Now, sure, it can be a little disconcerting to think of beloved Hollywood actors staying in character as disturbed psychopaths for months on end, but when it results in the award-winning performances of Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando and Heath Ledger, it's not too hard to see the potential value in the technique.
For some actors, though, going method can seem a little less like taking on a role, and a little more like revealing that they were already perfectly suited to it in the first place. A classic example of that?
Jared Leto Was Basically Born to Play The Joker
Y'see, Leto chose to stay in character as The Joker on the set of Suicide Squad, leading to a whole load of unusual antics (one or two of which pop up below), but if the actor's past behavior is any indicator, he may well have been channeling a few of the iconic villain's classic traits for a whole lot longer than that.
Here, then, are 7 of the most intriguing...
7. Leto Doesn't Ever Break Character
As Will Smith revealed, after shooting Suicide Squad alongside Leto:
"I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for 6 months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ He was all in on the Joker."
Which is exactly the same kind of unflagging, borderline insane commitment that defines the Joker. And Batman, come to think of it.
6. He Actively Breaks Society's Norms
This is arguably the very definition of what it is to be The Joker.
5. His Sense of Fashion is... Out There
Just like a certain purple-suited homicidal maniac we all know and love...
4. He Associates With Notorious Super-Villains
Because let's be honest, the only person alive more like a Batman villain than Jared Leto is Kanye West.
3. He's Willing to Mess With His Own Body to Get the Job Done
Remember how the comic book Joker recently cut off his own face as part of an elaborate scheme?
Well, if his past history of body morphing is any indication, Leto would most likely do that too if need be. He has, after all, lost and gained more weight in the pursuit of acting greatness than anyone this side of Christian Bale, going from feast for Chapter 27...
...to famine for Dallas Buyers Club...
Mr J would be proud...
2. He Seems to Hate Everyone's Favorite Hero
Specifically, Taylor Swift.
After all, Leto was caught on camera a few days ago revealing that he has issues with the singer (bad blood, even), adding:
"I mean fuck her, I don't give a fuck about her."
Now, sure, he later retracted the hell out of that...
...but isn't that exactly what The Joker would do too, just to mess with our heads?
1. He Went 'Full Joker' on the 'Suicide Squad' Set
Now, method acting can only go so far - ultimately being limited by the limits of the individual actors imagination and self-restraint.
Which makes Leto's reported antics on the Suicide Squad set all the more Joker-like, seeing as he must have come up with them himself. As his co-star Ike Barinholtz recently revealed:
"He did this crazy thing...all the actors were rehearsing, and his character is in love with Margot Robbie - she's Harley Quinn...so we're rehearsing, and this actor who plays the Joker's kind of lieutenant, walks in and he goes, 'Present for Ms. Quinn.' Hands her a box. She opens the box, and a live, giant black rat pops out," Barinholtz explained to Howard Stern. "And we're like, 'What the f--k is going on? That's crazy!' So 20 minutes later, we're still rehearsing, and the actor comes back in and he goes, 'This is for the squad from Mr. J. And he throws a pig on the table, a dead pig, and as he puts the pig on the table all these bullets start to come out of it...this is in a rehearsal space a month before we started shooting."
Which is cool and all, but also completely goddamn unhinged.
In other words? Leto was clearly born to play the part...
