Two weeks ago, the much awaited [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) trailer arrived online, and a week ago the much awaited Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer followed it, and now we have the complete trilogy. Of the three cinematic superhero universes on our screens, the Fox/Marvel one is both the longest running and arguably the least looked forward to. But there's no denying that X-Men: Days of Future Past was a huge success for them, and even the commercial failure that was the rebooted Fantastic Four film hasn't stopped them in their tracks, with Deadpool, Gambit and X-Men: Apocalypse all releasing next year!
Honestly, with all the other characters Fox is starting to capitalize on, I'm not sure when we will see another X-Men film after this one! However, back to the point, the trailer just arrived online and it looks amazing! Check it out below:
Now, while I didn't think this trailer quite matched up to Civil War or Batman v Superman, it still has a whole lot of awesome in it! Let's analyze.
So we start off with some very foreboding images and our first look at Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as our young Jean Grey. She looks pretty good in the role here, and is most definitely already at the Xavier school!
That's a nice looking place, hope it doesn't get destroyed.
Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is with Storm (Alexandra Shipp) here, and the bald guy appears to be Tomas Lemarquis, who is playing Caliban, a mutant whose power is to be able to track other mutants. This is definitely telling us part of Apocalypse's plan. Interesting fact, Caliban was a horseman of the apocalypse in the comics!
This looks like Apocalypse convincing Storm to become one of his four disciples. This film is going full on X-Men vs. X-Men!
Our first look at Beast (Nicholas Hoult) returning, and looking more blue and fluffy than ever!
Am I the only one wondering when Mystique is going to stop looking so much like Jennifer Lawrence? Wasn't she accepting who she was five years ago or something?
After fan favorite Nightcrawler failed to appear again after X-Men 2, many fans were left disappointed. Seeing a younger version here in Kodi Smit-McPhee may give them hope though! I'm not entirely sure what role he will play in this film, though he'll hopefully get a big one!
There are so many characters that this trailer is basically a who's who of X-Men. This is Jubilee (Lana Condor), who has fangs in the comics, and can create fireworks! (Name makes more sense now, huh?)
I'm not sure who this is crawling around, but it could be Apocalypse leaving his tomb after 2,000 years.
Hey! Why has he still got hair? He's meant to be bald! Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) returns to lead the X-Men in another fight... or does he?
And the equally ever-present Magneto (Michael Fassbender) returns to terrorize the X-Men and cause another fight... or does he?
You can see more of Apocalypse from this shot, he really looks pretty strange, doesn't he? I'm not sure what's going on with this look, but it'll probably be explained in the film!
Now, onto the four horsemen and what they mean to the story! Apocalypse going up against the X-Men on his own would be boring, so he gets four horsemen (of the Apocalypse) to help him out. We've already seen him convincing Storm.
And here's the much awaited Psylocke (Olivia Munn) in her first on-screen outing (as a villain of course).
Angel (or Archangel, as the case may be) is the only original X-Man to appear in as little as one film. But he's back again as the young Ben Hardy, and is looking much more badass than the previous incarnation in X-Men: The Last Stand.
And of course there he is. Magneto couldn't go an entire film without doing something evil! The immense amount of power Apocalypse can harness if he is controlling these four is scary, especially considering all the power he already has.
And as if there weren't enough explanation, here's some exposition for you. But I do love the line, "He got it from the bible." "Or the bible got it from him." Ooh, spooky.
Possibly, with the help of Caliban earlier, Apocalypse has found his way inside the school. It's going to get seriously bad, as we can tell from Charles's voiceover this scene: "Oh God. He can control all of us."
And all of a sudden, Mystique is good again. A bit of a shock, but a pleasant one, as she suits up and leads the X-Men into battle to stop the apocalypse! We can see here that the team that made the cut includes Mystique, Beast, Jean, Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Quicksilver! (Evan Peters) and Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne). Of course there are some noticeable absences, but we'll get to that!
This looks like the X-Men totally beaten down. I think it's Quicksilver in the middle but it's hard to tell. Maybe Beast and Mystique are there as well, and possibly Moira?
Well, it looks like Nightcrawler did make the cut, and these three, while not looking incredibly fearsome, are sure to deal out a lot of damage. Jennifer Lawrence must be used to leading an army between this and The Hunger Games, because, as she puts it, "This is war."
Well, you did tell him not to control his powers. It'll be interesting to see if the Jean-Scott relationship begins to bloom between the saving the world and all that in this film.
And I'm sure there's meant to be a story involving Quicksilver finding out that Magneto is his father. Maybe Eric wasn't too happy about that, because he looks torn up here. Could this be the moment that Apocalypse takes control of him?
I think this is inside Charles's mind, and Apocalypse turns out to have superior telekinetic abilities, because if Apocalypse can do that in real life they're all a little screwed.
After the Days of Future Past Quicksilver scene, I know everyone is looking forward to more of the same, but I have a feeling it'll be no laughing matter this time, just look at how worried he is!
Angel is in proper action here, as we see the horsemen getting their scary new powers bestowed upon them by Apocalypse!
And Storm is doing the same. Looks like she's already torn(ado) the place up a bit.
And it looks like he helped as well. I don't know why Psylocke didn't get an awesome scary moment like the other three horsemen, could it be she died already? That would be a bummer for her first appearance (yeah, I'm looking at you, Joss Whedon).
This might be the moment Apocalypse gets into the school, and it looks like some of the students aren't going to make it out of that blast alive. Charles is going to be getting some angry calls from parents.
Finally, a good look at the big guy. Apocalypse does look pretty terrifying, but it really doesn't look like he can move his neck.
And there's a whole lot of something going on here. It looks like Apocalypse is using Cerebro, but I doubt it. Maybe he is able to use Charles or Caliban to search for mutants in this way.
Well, they did name the film Apocalypse. And that's what it looks like is happening right here. It's going to get serious, guys.
Charles is looking a little corrupted here, and I worry about his fate in this film if that is happening. Cerebro has been the cause of a lot of bad things before, and I can see it being used by the wrong people again.
Oh thank God, I wondered where Patrick Stewart was!
