The joker is for me the best psychotic character that came out in a comic. Many actors did play the joker character on screen with their own way. Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger were my favorites. Jared Leto version is more realistic as seen in the trailer. So anyway, I was inspired by all of them and the comic books to come out with a mix of them all. I was imagining how he will be if he is a real character that close to the comic character. Making of this character helps me to improve my skills in Zbrush.

Development

The main tool I used to create Joker was Zbrush. Apart from that I used Maya, UV Layout and Photoshop. I made the base mesh from ZSpheres in brush and went on for a while till I get the necessary shape and details that I want. I personally didn't want to make it too Psychotic looking because I believe that realistic character might not be the comic kind of psycho looking but in his own way deadly and dangerous. After the necessary sculpting I jumped in to retopologizing using Zbrush. Then I export that mesh to Maya to fix the minor errors and details to keep the topology correct. Then, using UV layout I unwrap the model. I personally like UV layout and has been a big fan for years now. It allows user to easily unwrap any complex model.

The Texturing was done in Zbrush just using polypainting. Then I bake it to a map and readjust them in Photoshop (Adding tattoos and details). When creating hair Zbrush Fiber mesh can do a pretty awesome job. Though I always render in Maya I tried to use Zbrush for rendering also. It was a good test and learning opportunity for me. After trying out several methods I finally got the result I was looking for.

Render Passes
Render Passes

From Zbrush I rendered few passes such as Shadow, Depth and AO along with top light and back light. Usually I use 3 point lighting method for simple, light set up. But in this case I got good result just by using those two lights. Then using Photoshop I composite them into a final image that was happy with.
