ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) are doing the absolute most and best when it comes to brand-spanking-new series Shadowhunters. The show is based upon the seemingly never-ending, artfully created series of books and expanded universe created by American author Cassandra Clare. Shadowhunters is due to smash our screens, and fill our hearts on January 12, 2016!

The insanely gorgeous cast is headlined by The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials actress Kat McNamara, who takes on the lead role of Clarissa Fray. Clary – one feisty little Shadowhunter, who up until she meets the handsome and sarcastic badass that is Jace, lives a mundane life with her mom, Jocelyn. The character's been aged up for the ABC Family show, with Kat playing her as an 18-year-old, as opposed to the 16-year-old she is in the books.

BFF Simon, the resident adorable and slightly nerdy college student of the TV series (again aged up from his book counterpart), shows his closeness and compatibility with the Fray household in these sneak peek pics from Episode 1.

Taken on what looks to be Clary's 18th birthday, Simon is seen laughing and joking with the Frays and close family friend Luke Garroway. His TV counterpart is a cop for the show, unlike the book character, who owned a bookstore.

In the books, Simon and Clary are best friends, and while there are small hints of Simon having some romantic feelings for her, and although the pair do tread lightly into a potential relationship, they eventually discover that they're much better as friends. Whether or not the series will amplify this, creating a sort of love triangle between Clary-Simon-Jace, is unclear, but it's pretty common with shows – so expect the unexpected!

Later that day, at Pandemonium – a club sort of like a watered down Fangtasia (True Blood) – Clary can be seen accidentally killing a demon, as seen in the trailer.

We can assume for the purpose of this series, and the set-up of this scene, that this is Clary's first time killing a demon (and with a Seraph blade no less). In the books, we know that Clary's first encounter with a demon is in her kitchen with a Ravener Demon – that's an assassin Demon for any Mundanes reading this – who viciously attacks her. She fights tooth and nail for her life, managing to blow the demon up using the gas from her stove. If this is her first experience killing in the show, we can safely assume that unfortunately the Ravener Demon attack scene from the book won't be making its way to the small screen for the new series.

Prior to unexpectedly killing, Clary gets a little birthday gift from mamma Fray, in the shape of what looks like... a Stele.

Thanks Mom! What does it do?
Thanks Mom! What does it do?

Yep, you read and saw that correctly, a Stele. Steles, for those of you who don't know, are used by Shadowhunters to draw runes on their skin and weapons. Incidentally, Runes grant the wearer extra added supernatural abilities to aid in their Shadowhunting.

In the books, Clary's mom went as far as having her memories of the Shadowhunter world completely erased from her mind, by a powerful and fabulous warlock*. Cut to the television series, and she's now handing over the be all and end all (kind of) of the Shadowhunting world to Clary in the form of a Stele. For her birthday. From the very woman who tried to hide her from that entire side of life.

What are you hiding Mom?

While that makes no literal sense to me, not knowing any further context of the scene makes speculation hard. We obviously know that in making the television series, changes are to be expected, so I guess we'll have to wait until January 12th for an explanation of this interesting little tidbit.

Back to that powerful and fabulous Warlock

Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, and one half of Malec, smolders and pouts his way through the sneak peek at Episode 1. He's got FIERCE written all over his handsome and chiseled face, and wants everyone to know it!

Exhibit A - Too Cool for School

*He's not actually in school. FYI.

Exhibit B - How dare you not ship me with Alec?!

Be GONE peasant!

Speaking of Alec, the bow and arrow wielding Shadowhunter, smolders on the sly in this cute family pic with sister and fellow Shadowhunter, Izzy. (That's Isabelle to you.)

Izzy – the beautiful goddess and badass with a whip, appears in another sneak peek from the episode. Check it out below!

Talk about insanely gorgeous, right?! Played by Emeraude Toubia, Izzy is a fan favorite, and though the trailers haven't shown an awful lot of her or her brother, the behind the scenes pics give us a glimpse at their characters.

In this sneak peek clip of the series, Izzy shows her developing crush on cutie Simon, describing him as "Nerd Hot" after saving his life multiple times.

I'll be honest, Izzy's my favorite character and I'm all but 99% in love with Emeraude playing her. She along with the rest of the insanely talented cast look as though they're going to do a brilliant job with these characters, and after the movie, that's all we can hope for.

Here's a double dose of Malec for you as a special treat!

How adorable is it that Alec is taller than Magnus!? *squeal*
