"Today you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression or persecution.. But from annihilation."
Today 20th Century Fox released the trailer for the highly anticipated 'Independence Day' sequel (titled 'Independence Day: Resurgence'). If you have not already seen it you can view it below.
When the sequel to the 1996 sci-fi hit was announced, reports started circulating that Will Smith, who played one of the film's leading protagonists Captain Steven Hiller, would not be returning. This left many fans scratching their heads, wondering why the a-lister would not come back for the long-awaited sequel. In an interview with director Roland Emmerich we learned why Smith decided not to return.
"In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out."
With that question being answered, it left the creators of the sequel with somewhat of a problem, "how do we do the sequel without having the hero?" Well they were able to solve this issue in a very creative way. Along with the release of the trailer, 20th Century Fox created a documentary-style website explaining The War of 1996 (to visit the website click here). On the timeline that the website provides, we see that Captain Steven Hiller was killed due to an unknown malfunction during the first test flight of the first alien hybrid fighter in 2007. It also provides us with a brief synopsis of who Captain Hiller was and why he was so important.
So there you have it, in the 'Independence Day' universe Capt. Steven Hiller was killed as a result of a malfunction during the first test flight of a hybrid alien fighter.
Independence Day: Resurgence is set for release on June 24, 2016
