Trek fans rejoice: there's a new Star Trek TV show coming in 2017, and the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond is just days away from release! With geek god Simon Pegg penning the script and confessed Trekkie Justin Lin directing, there's plenty to be excited about for Beyond: the filmmakers have so far promised an adventurous spirit and a return to the thought provoking plots that made Trek great.
Before the trailer is officially released, we've got a sneak peek at some of the characters we'll see on the Enterprise's Five Year Mission.
Adventure Is Out There
Earlier this year, Justin Lin confirmed that after hanging around Earth for 2009's Star Trek and Into Darkness, the Enterprise will finally strike out on that Five Year Mission we've heard so much about. And we should expect to see all new aliens for the crew to discover...
Sofia Boutella, Space Cowboy?
[Kingsman: The Secret Service](tag:713143) star Sofia Boutella will team up with the crew of the Enterprise as this enigmatic alien.
Sofia Boutella's character is definitely not one of the classic Trek alien species, which makes sense as Lin previously stated that this movie will go beyond what we've seen before.
"It’s all new and fresh. The Klingons, Romulans and other species are great, but it’s time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species."
We don't know anything about Boutella's character yet, but thanks to set leaks it looks like she's helping Captain Kirk out on the crew's new mission.
All that green screen could end up as the surface of an exciting new world! And Sofia Boutella's character has already got us interested. With startling white skin and hair she looks very striking, and seems to be some kind of ally to the Enterprise crew. She's definitely not Starfleet, as she is dressed in civilian clothes.
From her general appearance, she could be a kind of bounty hunter or explorer – she looks like she's the adventuring type! Color me intrigued.
Spock's Not Looking Well
With his green blood, Spock doesn't always have the healthiest pallor. But he's certainly not looking his best in this picture!
We can see Bones behind Spock, and his skin also has this strange, grey-green hue. This could be an optical illusion caused by how the light of a star filters through an alien planet's atmosphere... or they've gone down with a bad case of space flu. (My money's on the first option.)
Finally, we've got this guy, who hasn't been seen in any of the previous set leaks.
With ridged cheekbones and some serious forehead prosthetics, this alien is certainly channeling the classic Star Trek alien designs. As Lin seems determined not to show us any alien races from the Trek shows, it's unlikely we already know what species he is, but we've definitely seen this guy somewhere before...
Jem'Hadar, 'Deep Space Nine'
Ok, the apparent similarities between DS9's Jem'Hadar and Beyond's new alien don't necessarily mean they're the same species. After all, this type of creature seems pretty popular in different studios' prosthetic departments.
The Judge, 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'
This blue dude didn't last long, as Buffy blew him apart with a bazooka. But he has a striking similarity to our Star Trek Beyond alien!
The Creeper, 'Jeepers Creepers'
Ok, there's no way that our Trek alien is related to The Creeper, but with those forehead ridges you can't ignore the resemblance!
Friend or Foe?
So we've got a classic look for an all new alien. But who could the creature be? Idris Elba's villainous role in Beyond still hasn't been revealed, but according to the actor his character will be an awesome addition to the cast.
"He’s a guy who wants to end the world, there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist. It’s an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But it still keeps with the ’classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone."
We can't wait to find out if this blue dude really is Idris Elba, or another character entirely!
