(Warning - the following likely contains major SPOILERS for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, though thankfully largely theoretical ones. Proceed with whatever level of caution your innate SPOILER-aversion suggests is wise...)
When it comes to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we already know that we're set to see more DC superheroes teaming up on the big screen than ever before. Between Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman and – most likely – both Cyborg and The Flash, we're going to be well on our way to meeting the entire Justice League by the time the credits roll in March.
The big question still remaining, though?
Are We Going to See a Similarly Vast Number of Villains in 'Batman v Superman'?
After all, with the recent trailer seemingly teasing not only the presence of Lex Luthor, his muscle Mercy Graves, Holly Hunter's Senator Finch, a somewhat deceased General Zod AND the legendary Superman-battler Doomsday, we may well be set to see a stellar array of villains facing off against our increasingly well-supported heroes.
The most intriguing part?
It Sounds Like We're Going to See an Even Bigger Bad in 'Batman v Superman'
Yup, that's right. From the sounds of it, neither Lex Luthor nor Doomsday is necessarily going to be Batman v Superman's 'biggest bad.' Instead, as the film's production designer Patrick Tatopoulos recently teased in Premiere, it seems there'll be a "larger threat" appearing alongside those already announced villains.
If you're wondering how that'll fit into an already apparently plot-stuffed movie, though, then prepare to have your brain mildly addled. Y'see, according to Tatopoulos, not only will the "timeframe of how things fall into place... surprise fans," but "Doomsday isn't just the final act."
In other words?
It Seems We Still Haven't Seen Our Big Final Act Villain
Now, the question of who that could be is, of course, a SPOILER-filled one – but it's also inevitably almost entirely blind speculation at this point. As such, here are three of the most obvious potential final churls we might just see.
Arguably the DC comic book universe's biggest bad of them all, Darkseid's appearance in the final act might be a little too similar to Marvel Studios's use of Thanos to actually happen, but it's still tough not to root for the dastardly New God to make some kind of an appearance. After all, he's one of the few villains who's regularly proved a match for both Batman and Superman...
A super-powered artificial intelligence with a Krypton-linked past (and therefore potentially unusual ties to Superman? Did somebody say 'potential Man of Steel 2 villain'?
Lex Luthor in a Giant Green Mechanical Suit of Armor
Now, on the one hand, an already-established-to-be-appearing Luthor turning up in the final act wearing a giant, kryptonite-laced battlesuit could potentially be something of a let-down compared to the classic villains listed above – but if he used it to stop both Doomsday and Superman, thus setting himself on the path to the presidency? Well, that would be a different story altogether...
The big question now, then?
