Back in 1964, Dick Van Dyke wowed us all in the role of Bert in the Disney classic Mary Poppins. Starring along Julie Andrews as the straight-talking nanny, the actor brought to life the lovable jack-of-all-trades with that adorable Cockney accent. Fuel your nostalgia with the trailer for the movie here:
More than 50 years on, it appears that the legendary Dick Van Dyke kicked off his 90th birthday celebrations by going back in time to his days as Bert, the jolly chimneysweep. This past Saturday, the actor bore witness to one of the most magical flash-mobs ever, which performed some of his character's iconic songs at The Grove in Los Angeles.
Posting the fantastic video of the entire performance in his honor, he shared the following to his Twitter account:
"I am very grateful that at 90 years old, I can still go out and play."
And go out and play Van Dyke did! Stepping out onto an overlooking balcony, he rained down his praises, clapping and whooping throughout the entire four songs. Take a look at some of the Mary Poppins classics that were covered:
The group started by showing off their moves to 'Jolly Holiday,' bringing a beaming smile to Van Dyke's face. If you need reminding, here's the original song from the movie:
Chim Chim Cher-ee
The crowd then got a little melancholy with the slightly slower 'Chimm Chim Cher'ee...'
Step in Time
Before diving straight back into a fast-paced rhymth with 'Step in Time!'
Naturally the grand finale could only be 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!'
And finally, and because we simply wouldn't expect anything else, the actor performed the touching 'Let's Go Fly a Kite' with the rest of the group of dedicated youngsters – oh, isn't he a good sport? We love you Dick van Dyke!
