Last week brought us the new X-Men Apocalypse trailer and if you've missed it (or want to see it for the hundredth time) watch it here:
The trailer makes things look like we can expect Apocalypse to be the darkest X-Men film to date! The trailer even opens with Jean telling the Professor about her dream where she witnesses the end of the world, and she could feel all the death that came with it. Pretty dark stuff, but with Apocalypse coming in as the villain, we knew we could expect it to be pretty dark, and honestly I'd be disappointed if it wasn't!
With the darker elements in the movie, and the strongest and most evil X-Men villain yet, it's more than likely we'll see an X-Men fall in this new film! After all, a villain who can't kill a single hero really doesn't seem very dangerous! Surely they'll have him kill someone halfway through the film so that we believe the danger to our heroes is real! Here's my thoughts on who might die!
Storm, Jean and Cyclops
Let's get these three out of the way first; it seems very unlikely that we'll see Cyclops, Jean or Storm die in this upcoming film as they're brand new characters, and they're the future faces of the continuing X-Men franchise! Plus we saw them in the future when Wolverine woke up at the end of [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](tag:203942) alive and well, and that future is still intact, so chances on their deaths are slim!
Possibility of Death: 5-10%
Out of the three, Jean would be the only one I could see dying if they wanted to give us a better version of the Dark Phoenix Saga in a follow up film, but I think it's too early for that to happen!
Beast, Xavier and Wolverine
Another trio that seems unlikely to be killed off is our heroes from Days of Future Past: Beast, Xavier and Wolverine. These three have been around for a long time, and we know that Wolverine has a solo movie coming up so it's unlikely we'll see him die! Plus, all three are alive and well in the future we peaked into at the end of Days of Future Past. However, that being said, every character has died and come back to life in the comics once or twice, so nothing is guaranteed!
Possibility of Death: 10-15%
Out of the three it would be most likely that Xavier would die somewhere in the film. The comic book story line that introduced Apocalypse, 'Age of Apocalypse', showed Xavier dead and Magneto leading the X-Men. It's possible in some way we'll see Xavier sacrifice himself for his dream even if he was alive and well in the future.
Pietro became a fan favorite last year in Days of Future Past where he aided Xavier and Wolverine in breaking Magneto out of prison. Comic book fans know the irony is that Magneto is actually Quicksilver's father, and we're still hoping to see this relationship explored on screen!
Possibility of Death: 20%
We know Quicksilver will have an enlarged role in this film, and we're expecting an even larger and more fun speedster scene like the one in the kitchen in DOFP, but could Quicksilver die? His Avenger counterpart was recently killed in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035) so it would be disappointing if we lost him in both universes! I think it's highly unlikely we'll see him die in this upcoming film solely because he became a huge fan favorite after DOFP, and he has so much potential in any upcoming films of the franchise! There's also a chance that his father will die and if the circumstances were right Quicksilver could re-create the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and become the future villain in his father's footsteps.
Nightcrawler has been a fan favorite, but so far he's only showed up in X2! Fans have been begging for more, and we're finally getting to see this much younger version of our blue hero!
As you may or may not know, Nightcrawler is actually Mystique's son that she abandoned in his childhood. In the comics, Mystique and Azazel (red teleporter from X-Men: First Class) were his parents, but he was raised by carnival folk which is where his acrobatics come from! This could totally be the origin and parentage for Nightcrawler in the film as well! We've jumped decades often enough that it's possible Azazel and Mystique had a relationship between FC and DOFP! I'm hoping for some mother/son drama because it would be really awesome to see that side of Mystique!
Possibility of Death: 20%
Witch Caliban and the Morlocks popping up in Apocalypse, it's likely this is where Xavier recruits Nightcrawler, but I doubt he'll die since the fans want him around, and he has a rich comic book history to pull from for future films. Since we didn't see him in the DOFP future teaching students at the Institute his future is unknown and anything is a possibility - even his early death!
Honestly, Angel is the character I'm most excited to see come to life in Apcalypse, especially after seeing a peak at his Archangel form as the Horsemen of Death in the trailer! It'll be really fun to see how much they pull from the comics! Originally, Angel joined Apocalypse because he was promised his wings back after they'd be brutally torn off his body by a different villain, and Angel felt he had no reason to live without them.
Possibility of Death: 20%
He's going to be portrayed as the villain for a good portion of the movie, and the easy ending would be the X-Men defeat Apocalypse and the Four Horsemen (Magneto, Storm, Angel and Psylocke) join the good guys and everything ends happily. The more realistic ending is that people die, and if things get as dark and crazy as the trailer makes us believe it's very likely that at least one of the Horsemen will die in the final battle. I hope it's not Angel as I'd love to see him in the future, but where he'll be in the line of fire there's always a chance!
Jubilee is another fan favorite that's finally set to appear in X-Men Apocalypse! She's not only giving the X-Men a wonderful new female character, but also some more ethnical diversity!
Jubilee is largely remembered by fans from the '90s cartoon where she was rescued by the X-Men from a foster home. In the comics, however, Jubilee was a homeless runaway who was befriended by Wolverine and brought to Xavier. Her powers have varied over the decades as she's lost them and gained new ones, but originally she could project energy. She's a pretty strong heroine, and even joins S.H.I.E.L.D. and it's New Warriors later in the comics!
Possibility of Death: 30%
It's unlikely we'll see Jubilee die as she also has a ton of comic book history and stories that could easily translate to the big screen. Anything can happen though, after all Darwin was killed during his first appearance in First Class as a "red shirt" so we could see how dangerous and evil Shaw was. I could see Jubilee's character being treated in a similar fashion!
We already know that Magneto will spend a good chunk of this film being manipulated by Apocalypse as one of his Horsemen. Obviously the X-Men will be fighting against the Four Horsemen and Apocalypse, and in the trailer we hear Mystique encourage the young mutants that they're at war! It's very unlikely they'll go easy on Apocalypse's team even if they're being controlled! With the dark tones of the trailer, and the Apocalypse character, I believe the battle will end with extreme injuries and at least one certain death!
Possibility of Death: 40%
I think Magneto would be a great choice to kill off because the fans do love him, and if his death was as a sacrifice we would truly see this character come full circle in redemption! Magneto is another long standing character that we've seen plenty of in the X-Men films! His death would be tremendously felt by us fans, and since he wasn't seen in the future at the Institute with the others his future is unknown!
Psylocke is another new character coming to the franchise! She briefly appeared as a mutant goon in Magento's Brotherhood in X3, but was never explored. Olivia Munn looks perfect for the role, and they've also given her an exact version of her comic book costume, so I'm pretty excited to see Pylocke!
In the comics, Psylocke is a limited psychic with telekinesis, telepathy, precognition and a special psychic katana blade. She's also extremely skilled in the martial arts! We don't know where she'll be starting out, but we do know that she's one of the Four Horsemen working with Apocalypse.
Possibility of Death: 60%
Just like the other Horsemen, Psylocke will be in the line of fire and, assuming our heroes win the fight, she'll be on the losing end of that battle! If any of the Horsemen die I think Psylocke makes the most sense. Magneto's death would really affect the fans, but I think Psylocke would be the character average viewers are least familiar which makes her expendable.
Havok was one of Xavier's students in First Class, but in Days of Future Past we saw him overseas as a Vietnam war vet who nearly became one of Trask's mutant victims.
In the comics, Havok and Cyclops were brothers, but with about twenty years between First Class and Apocalypse Havok is a much older than the one we originally met, and the Cyclops we're meeting in this film is a teenager. Is it possible that Havok will actually be his father? In the trailer we saw Havok at the Institute with Mystique, Beast and Xavier. We also saw him with Moira. It's likely that he's been with her as she's been researching the mutant phenomenon over the past decade or two. If Havok is in fact Cyclops' father, is it possible that Moira is his mother?
Possibility of Death: 70%
Havok was a great addition to the First Class story line, and he was fun to see in DOFP, but with so many additions to the cast for Apocalypse, do we really need him around in the future? Let's assume that Havok is Cyclops's father, and that he takes his son to Xavier for training and because Cyclops can't control his powers. He's later killed in front of his son, and it would create quite some growth for Cyclops's young, timid and uncertain character that we saw in this new trailer proclaim he can't control his powers. It would also create some potential for Xavier to step in and fill that fatherly role for Cyclops.
Mystique is one of the X-Men characters that fans are most familiar with, and she's appeared alongside our characters, both as a hero and a villain, in six films now. Jennifer Lawrence has been able to breathe some great depth into her as well as this young version of Mystique has been written to be quite independent and complicated. At the end of DOFP we saw her alter the world's future with an act of compassion in letting Trask live. In the Apocalypse trailer we see her alongside Xavier and the X-Men fighting, and even leading the new generation of X-Men.
Possibility of Death: 85%
Jennifer Lawrence has stated that she will not be returning to the franchise again after this film now that her contract is up. However Mystique could easily be re-cast because she's a shape-shifter, but I think it would be unnecessary as we've seen her in six films, and I would love to see different and new characters come into the spotlight.
It would also be extremely poetic to have Mystique die in this film as we've seen her struggle between being a hero and a villain. If her son, Nightcrawler, is in danger it would also be very awesome to see her sacrifice herself for him! In the end Mystique is the character I would most like to see die, not because I dislike her but because I like her so much that I think it would be the best ending for her arc that we could hope for!
Well there you have it! My guesses, assumptions and hopes on who will and won't die in the next X-Men installment! This movie can't come fast enough! I can't believe we still have six months to wait for this to come out!
