With a stellar cast and an intriguing premise, Suicide Squad is shaping up to be one of 2016's most eagerly anticipated movies. Promising an edgy take on the superhero genre, Suicide Squad plays role reversal with many of its main characters, as a group of reprobates and villains is formed to take on a dangerous mission.
Until this point, it was unclear exactly what this mission was, and why Amanda Waller chose to assemble her team. The trailer is fantastic, setting up the situation and presenting plenty of questions.
So who, or what, is this big threat that Amanda Waller wants neutralised? After months of fan speculation, a new official synopsis just gave us the clue we needed to solve this riddle....
Yesterday, DC Comics released some collectible Suicide Squad statues ahead of the film's release. Among this release was an updated version of the synopsis, dropping new hints and giving a more comprehensive overview of the plot.
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
At first glance, this seems like a reformulation of what we know already: Task Force X are formed to take out a threat, they're actually the "patsies", and they have to decide whether to save the day or abandon ship. It's a pretty solid plot, and a nice twist on a typical superhero tale.
But buried in the synopsis, there's a crucial hint that determine the plot of the film... and the real villain!
Up until this point, many fans theorised that the ultimate antagonist of Suicide Squad would be the Joker. This makes sense, as his appearance doesn't seem to be limited to just flashbacks: the trailer also shows him breaking into a facility, as his gang shoot their way in. But another fan theory posited that Enchantress was the real villain of the piece, as she has not been seen in any group shots in the trailer.
Enchantress has an interesting origin story: in DC Comics when the human girl June Moon goes exploring in a haunted house she is possessed by an immensely powerful magical being, and becomes the Enchantress.
Starting off as a heroic figure, Enchantress later fell prey to her more villainous urges. Later still, she joined the Suicide Squad.
In the Suicide Squad movie, it seems as though June may discover the truth about this magical entity while spelunking, and later perform a ritual to become Enchantress, as we see her use a pentagram. It's entirely possible that Suicide Squad will tell her origin story, as well as revealing how she became a villain. So will she be part of Task Force X, or are they assembled to defeat her?
This question might just have been answered. According to the synopsis, Waller assembles the team to take down "an enigmatic, insuperable entity". This definitely sounds like Enchantress! After all, the Joker is not really powerful enough to be referred to as insuperable, and he's not an entity either, unlike the creature possessing June.
So Enchantress looks set to be the big bad that Task Force X will fight.
And this just poses even more questions!! Here's what we want answered by the next Suicide Squad trailer...
- Does Amanda Waller want Task Force X to fail? Why?
- How does Joker fit into all of this?
- Are Joker and Enchantress working together?
- What is Enchantress doing, and why?
As with pretty much all of 2016's big releases, Suicide Squad is shrouded in mystery. With any luck, the next trailer will shed some light on these issues and if not, at least there's plenty of fun in speculating about them before the movie is released!
