Astra tells Kara she no longer wants to fight and asks her to join her on her mission to rule the world, so that their people can live there. Kara tells her that she will never help her and escapes. When she gets back to the DEO, Hank and Alex tell her to take get some rest so that she can train with her later. Back at Catco, Kara, James, Winn, and Lucy help Cat track down a
hacker responsible for releasing Cat's e-mails, leading them to a CatCo
executive who wants to oust Cat from the company. Kara confronts Astra after she uses the news to draw her out and they fight. Kara defeats her aunt and drags her back to the DEO to be locked up. Winn, Kara and Jimmy work together to plant a bug in Dirk Armstrong's office so that Winn can find evidence to help Cat. Cat reveals to Kara
that she has a son that she has not seen in 24 years and Kara tells Cat to reach out to him. Kara's quest to stop Astra is suddenly conflicted when Astra explains
why Alura sentenced her, but Kara refuses to believe her story until she
discovers the truth that her mother was trying to keep from finding
out. Just as Cat is about to step down from her position to protect Adam, James, Winn, and Lucy walk in with evidence that Dirk was behind the whole plot to take her out of the company. Cat tells him she is not stepping down and has him escorted out. Kara goes to make sure he leaves the building and Jimmy takes the time to tell Winn that he should tell Kara how he really feels. Alex reviews the footage from the fight between Kara and Astra and thinks that something is wrong. J'onn tell her that he can read minds except Kryptonians so he can not find out what Astra is planning. It turns out that Astra used her battle against Supergirl as
part of a plan to take over Lord Technologies, lead by her husband Non
and his army of Kryptonians. While thanking Kara for helping her Cat tells her she knows that she is Supergirl. She had pieced together the fact that whenever Kara was gone, Supergirl showed up and asks her to remove her glasses. She thanks Supergirl for saving her and the city from all the threats. Alex calls Kara and tells her to meet her and Hank at Lord Technologies as they learned of Astra's plan. An all out battle ensues with the DEO agents being easily dispatched. The
Kryptonians also bought along anti-kryptonite devices to shield them
from attacks, although Hank takes out one after he discovered that Hank
was an alien. Kara arrives just in time to stop Non from killing Alex and a battle between them ensues.
A lot of this episode was more of a set up for the rest of the season, but there were still some pretty cool fight scenes. Kara has really come along with her combat skills and we see that in this episode.
Non: Astra's husband and Kara's uncle. He is a ruthless Kryptonian who stops at nothing to make sure his race have a new home. They have picked earth and plan to take over it. He was formerly part of the Kryptonian Science Council Society, but was sent to the Phantom Zone along with his wife Astra for harming people who did not side with their agenda on Krypton. Unlike his comicbook counterpart, he was not lobotomized and is still super intelligent.
Dirk Armstrong: A scheming executive who had Cat's emails hacked in order to drive her out of the company. His plans are foiled by team Supergirl in the end. His comic book counterpart was actually to a columnist at Metropolis who often butted heads with Clark Kent and Perry White. He also has a dislike for Superman and often wrote negatively about him. He had a blind daughter named Ashbury who would frequently be tied to Jimmy Olsen and Superman.
Team Supergirl- I guess we can sort of add Lucy and Cat to the team now. Lucy has yet to learn of Kara's secret and Cat just learned of it, but it's nice to see the team expanding. A lot of what they had to deal with this episode was healping Cat, while Kara handled her family problems with Hank and Alex. They may have solved Cat's problem, but Kara is still working on hers.
Kara and Alex- Alex really acted the big sister part in this episode and told Kara to step aside so that Hank could handle it. We know that Alex is trying to protect her, but keeping secrets from Kara doesn't always roll over too well. It seemed like their sparring session was a stress reliever for them both. Then we have the equivalent of a "broment" between the two when Alex comforts Kara after learning of her mother's secret.
Kara and Astra- Kara was right about one thing, her aunt is a total nutcase. She tried to justify her actions to Kara like she did to her sister in flashbacks, but you can see the crazy in her eyes. She had that beat down by Kara coming to her.
Kara and Alura- I wonder if Kara would have shot her heat ray vision at her mother if she were really standing there. It was a pretty emotional scene and everything Kara knew about her life seemed like a lie. It was sad, but hopefully this doesn't totally taint the image she had of her mom before learning the truth.
Kara and J'onn- They only share a couple of scenes, but you can alreayd see and hear the difference in their interactions with one another. I can not believe Kara didn't pick up on it. J'onn even joked about tge knife Astra had and how much he wanted it back. His demeanor changed and he wasn't harsh to her like he normally was. I can not wait to wee when he finally reveals his truth self to her.
Kara and Winn- Just like most episodes, Winn really pulled through for Kara and the team again. Every superhero team needs the guy or girl, who is the one they all rely on. Jimmy may have connections on his own, but without Winn they wouldn't have gotten as far as they've come. Yet again, we are crushed to see Winn have to hide his feelings for Kara and just be sidelined. She acknowledged and thanked him at leas this episode.
Kara and Jimmy- Kara said it, they are friends who hug and that's it. Yeah, they still have a little thing building there, but they can't do anything about since Jimmy is with Lucy.
Winn and Jimmy- The tension has been there from the start, but they finally seemed to have fixed that in this episode. Jimmy even went and encouraged Winn to tell Kara how he really felt about her. There is a potential bromance starting up with these two.
Alex and J'onn- Now that they are on the same page, Alex and Hank are finally able to work and get the job done. It was pretty interesting to see her reactions to learning new things about J'onn and his abilities, such as being able to read minds.
Non and Astra- They are husband and wife, but he is her subordinate, rank wise. The thing is it seemed like he has this sort of hold over her and she believes everything he tells her. I wonder if her love for Kara will eventually pit the two against each other.
Astra and the DEO- Alex wanted to kick her ass so bad and J'onn just wanted to find out what it really was they were planning. Being locked in a cell with no escape and she still taunts the two saying they can not stop what is about to happen.
Alura and Astra- We get to see a little more of a back story of why Astra seems to be out of her mind. She may have kind of succeeded in making Kara believe that her mother was the bad one, but Astra hurt people on their home planet. She may have sentenced all those people to the Phantom Zone, but she didn't kill them. There is still some things that have us questioning them both though.
Cat and Dirk- I've felt back for everyone on this show who has had to feel the wrath of Cat, but Dirk the Jerk is an exception. She tore him apart at the end and then kicked him while he was down.
Opal City- The city where Cat's son lives. In the comics Opal City is home to heroes such as Starman, Stargirl and Starboy. Hopefully down the road we get to see some of these characters show up in some way.
Adam Foster- Cat mentions her first son who she hasn't seen in years. In the comics Adam Grant was killed by the Toyman when he was a child, but here he is an adult. Hopefully he doesn't suffer the same fate as his comic book counterpart and it looks like he is going to be a love interest for Kara. Ironically, he is going to be portray by Melissa Benoist real husband, Blake Jenner.
What's to Come/Theories:
Now that Cat knows Kara's secret and that an all out war is about to break out, the next half of the season will be pretty interesting. Cat also mentions her son Adam Foster who is going to be coming to National City and could be another potential love interest for Kara.
Non and his rag tag team look like they are going to be around for a bit and Kara can not possibly stop them all by herself. This would be the perfect time for J'onn to make his epic reveal to her.
We're still waiting on Maxwell's OMACs to make an appearance and for Winn's father the Toyman to come back into his life.
Supergirl has also cast Italia Ricci as Siohban Smythe a.k.a Silver Banshee, in a recurring role. We will finally be getting another villain who won't be a one and done, so that's exciting. Ironically her fiance Robbie Amell plays the other half of Firestorm on The Flash. Even though these shows are on different networks, eventually down the line they could cross paths. Until then we could dream about it.
A teenage Clark Kent will also show up in flashbacks, but we all know of a certain person who's played Clark Kent (ehem Tom Weliing) to cameo as Superman. In a perfect tv universe I guess.
This will be more of an overall rating for this half season. Supergirl proved that it has a place with these superhero shows out nowadays. It definitely had a lot of stand out moments and just like every show out there, had its fair share of filler episodes. None of them were bad though, and the story is just beginning. This show has surprised me and actually exceeded my expectations of it. Plus, it's just super fun to watch. You can be a butt hurt comic book nerd and criticize every little thing wrong with what you see, but isn't it ultimately about enjoying it? What did you think about this episode? Leave it in the comments below, we'd lvoe to read them! We can't wait for Supergirl to return on January 4th, 2016!
