It's no secret that James Cameron likes to take his time. As an avant-garde filmmaker and all-around perfectionist, he's a director who is willing to take the time necessary to make his projects the best they can be.
While keeping quiet on the development of three promised sequels might be concerning with other directors at the helm, the fact that James Cameron has been keeping near radio silence might actually be a good thing.
After bringing in in $2.788 billion to the box offices and becoming one of the highest grossing movies of all time, it makes sense that fans of Avatar are eager to head back to Pandora. Luckily, in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron alleviated fan's concerns.
I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set].
Makes sense. Considering he's planning on filming all three sequels simultaneously, it's probably best all of the details are worked out beforehand.
When asked whether or not the filmmaking process gets easier after time, Cameron was quick to laugh and cite his own perfectionism and ambition as the reason.
Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.
I'd much rather wait it out to get a better product in the end. So take your time, Cameron! We'll just be here patiently waiting.
Avatar 2 is expected to reach theaters on December 25, 2017.
