Inspired by the success of the Transformers 5 writers room, Paramount just announced the launch of their new shared universe. Following along the lines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this epic team-up will see G.I. Joe join forces with M.A.S.K., the Micronauts, and ROM! But is there hope for a Transformers crossover?

Awesome New Adventure

Paramount and Hasbro have seen such success with their Transformers and G.I. Joe films that it's understandable that they would want to bring in Hasbro's other properties to expand the universe.

Paramount chairman Brad Grey broke the news to THR.

"We're excited to grow our agreement and make even more movies based upon these popular and powerful Hasbro characters and their worlds. These brands are filled with memorable stories and vivid characters, and this universe creates a framework for how they will become interconnected."

So who are the new contenders? It looks like the G.I. Joe team could be heading for some space adventures, as they team up with...

The Micronauts

Originally from the microscopic region known as the Microverse, which is not unlike Marvel's Quantum Realm. In fact, thanks to a deal with Marvel Comics, the space-faring Micronauts teamed up with Ant-Man in their comic series back in the 1980s.

Aside from their comic appearances, the Micronauts were one of Hasbro's more popular toy lines, and you can see how they work in this ad from 1977!

Space warriors fighting an evil and powerful being? There's definitely a market for this right now, thanks in a large part to the popularity of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars. We can't wait to see how these sci-fi heroes can join forces with the G.I. Joe team! But they won't be alone...

Short for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand, M.A.S.K. is a covert task force formed to combat the Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem (V.E.N.O.M., obviously).

M.A.S.K. to the rescue!
M.A.S.K. to the rescue!

This team-up makes a lot of sense with the existing G.I. Joe story: maybe M.A.S.K. have a connection to NATO? They could even be a covert branch of the organization!

Like the Micronauts, the Visionaries plot is also set in space, but this story has a touch of dystopia too. After all technology fails on their advanced planet, the Visionaries use old magic to get by, and divide into two groups: the Spectral Knights and Darkling Lords.

We're starting to sense a theme here... could the Spectral Knights join the Micronauts in their origin story movie?

It's another space-based hero for this new cinematic universe! ROM the Space Knight is a cyborg from a utopian planet far away from Earth. His main foes are the Dire Wraiths, magical cosmic beings who are just generally evil, and like to invade unsuspecting planets.

ROM joins the fray.
ROM joins the fray.

And again, ROM is a logical team-up option for the Micronauts. We've had no further information about how the shared universe will actually work, but it's possible that ROM and the Micronauts could work together before the eventual team-up with M.A.S.K. and the G.I. Joe team.

But what about the Transformers?

Is there an epic crossover planned for the Transformers franchise too? It's definitely possible: there have been rumblings of a crossover between G.I. Joe and Transformers for a long time. [G.I. Joe: Retaliation](tag:41694) director John Chu is enthusiastic about the idea, even throwing in his latest movie Jem and the Holograms into the mix...

"I mean, I’m a huge Transformers fan, I would totally be down for that. I really want to build my universe with Jem—but you could have Jem, G.I. Joe, and Transformers collide—one epic blockbuster!"

Considering that G.I. Joe and Transformers already crossed over in a 2004 comic book, it's possible that Paramount may consider this for their Hasbro cinematic universe! But for the moment, we just have the news that the shared universe will combine G.I. Joe, Micronauts, M.A.S.K. and ROM.
