A new year, a new you, or so the saying goes. Most of us feel reborn in January and set to work carrying grand plans of hitting the gym and surviving on an alcohol free, apple filled diet for the foreseeable future, mainly because we're tired of feeling, well, like this:
However, these optimistic ideals usually fall on their face, Bridget Jones style, the moment we fancy something containing a little substance or, I don't know, fun? But for the determined few, these lightbulb moments of rejuvenation carry a little more clout, and transform from inspiration into reality.
So, on that note, here's a list of 9 celebrities who have set their minds to losing a large proportion of their body weight in 2015.
1. Melissa McCarthy
Weight Lost: A rumoured 50lbs
McCarthy has even started her own clothing line to provide stylish fashion to larger women:
"Only wear solids? Don't wear bright colors? That's not real. Somebody made up these rules, and I disagree. It's an odd thing that you can't go shopping with your friends because your store is upstairs hidden by the tire section."
2. Chris Hemsworth
Weight Lost: 15lbs (on top of losing an unconfirmed amount for thriller Blackhat)
Reason: In the Heart of the Sea
“That’s all we spoke about. You’ve got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet and who’d lost more weight and who’s looking really skinny. It’s ridiculous!”
3. Mark Hamill
Weight Lost: Approximately 50 lbs
Reason: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
"I'm on the 'if it tastes good, don't eat it' diet."
4. Jake Gyllenhaal
Weight Gain: 45lbs (from his 30lbs Nightcrawler weight loss)
"I went into full training-camp mode and I got myself—what I consider in my mind as an actor—in shape to fight. I was literally learning the skills of boxing, which is not only for the body, but also for the mind. You can't play a boxer and just look like a boxer; you have to believe you can exist in that world."
5. Khloe Kardashian
Weight Lost: 13lbs
Her trainer Gunnar Peterson said:
"Khloe's a full-on animal in the gym. No complaining, no b*tching, no kvetching. The changes she's made [to her body] are incredible. She's done it the right way. Nothing fast, just hard work. Her body is bangin' right now."
6. Rosie O'Donnell
Weight Lost: Upwards of 50lbs
Rosie O'Donnell 's weight loss is down to a gastric bypass surgery.
"It's not like all of a sudden you change and, boom, you lose the weight, everything's fine, you got on a size 10, life is great. You're having amazing sex. Nothing is wrong. It doesn't work that way. So all of the stuff that you carry with you as a heavy person in the world will still be there when you're a thin person in the world."
7. John Goodman
Weight Lost: 100lbs
Goodman credits his weight loss to a no alcohol and sugar free diet.
"It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you're going to eat next. I wanted to live life better."
8. Oprah Winfrey
Weight Lost: 15lbs
Back in 2009 she revealed her goals to O Magazine:
"My goal isn't to be thin. My goal is for my body to be the weight it can hold — to be strong and healthy and fit, to be itself. My goal is to learn to embrace this body and to be grateful every day for what it has given me."
9. Kevin Smith
Weight Lost: 85lbs
Talking to Men's Health, Smith said his weight loss wake up call was sparked after watching the documentary Fed Up.
"Awesome documentary, an anti-sugar documentary that completely changed my perception. So then I watch this documentary last year, and I was, like, 'Oh, man, um, I really don't wanna die' – and I'm already 44 years old."
