Some spoilers for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' will inevitably lie ahead. Nothing too heavy, but if you're on a complete spoilers boycott then this is not the article you're looking for.
You may have heard the rumour a while back, as leaked by Simon Pegg himself, that James Bond, a.k.a. Daniel Craig was playing the role of a Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was then revealed that Craig had actually asked for the role, which seems pretty uncharacteristic.
As reported by 'Entertainment Weekly', when asked about the allegations that he would make a cameo in the upcoming Star Wars movie, Craig supposedly said:
“Why would I ever bother doing something like that? F—ing hell! Pffft. Play an extra in another movie?...
Talk to Simon Pegg. He obviously knows way more than I do. He’s just jealous because he’s not in Star Wars. He’s got some issue with J.J. I don’t know what the f— it is. You need to talk to Simon about it.”
It's a testament to Craig's acting ability that this turned out to be insincere; either that or his dry British wit was lost on many of his fans across the water. Regardless, an article published by 'Entertainment Weekly' on December 17th began with the choppy sentence:
"Daniel Craig lied to me."
Oh... let the hate flow through you!
It has now been officially confirmed that Daniel Craig did cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Stormtrooper. Did you notice him?
Okay... before the legions of Star Wars fans hunt me down and throw me headfirst into the Sarlacc Pitt, it's worth pointing out that the above shot is not from The Force Awakens. I know -- shock and awe!
Although Craig's cameo was at an important part of the movie, his face was hidden from us at all times. So besides a bit of banter with Rey and a small speaking role, he blends in pretty easily. It turns out that both Spectre and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens were shooting at Pinewood Studios in London, meaning Craig could just stick his head in to the Star Wars studio for a quick cameo
When do we see Daniel Craig? (Spoilers)
In case you're curious or so you can look out for Craig's appearance in the future, he plays the role of a particular Stormtrooper who is "persuaded" to release Rey from captivity. This moment, in which Rey displays her first real intentional use of force powers, shows her using the mind-trick ability on the unsuspecting trooper, with whom she shares a little dark humour.
I'm paraphrasing slightly, but the quote is:
"You will remove these restraints and leave the door open...
You will drop your gun."
Despite the significance of this scene, we also see a touch of humour as the Stormtrooper at first resists the mind trick, before succumbing entirely.
"I will drop my gun."
Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens is out and making a huge splash in the cinematic community. So in case you haven't seen it, here's one of the finest Star Wars VII trailers.
Meanwhile, let's play a classic game of where's Daniel Craig!
