Star Wars is back! After 10 years, we have a new film in the saga and damn was this good. Now I'm going to do my best not to spoil anything, but I have to talk about the basic plot of the movie.
Set 30 years after the events of "Return of the Jedi", the film focuses on Rey (played by Daisy Ridley), Finn (played by John Boyega) and BB-8 (as himself) trying to get important information to the Resistance while being hunted after by the First Order. Along the way way they meet Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) who helps them.
This is definitely a Star Wars movie. It takes themes and becomes very reminiscent of the original trilogy while still being its own story. Characters like Han and Leia are in it, but the main characters are definitely Finn, Rey, and Poe (played by Oscar Isaac). But with that being said, the returning characters still evolve. Han isn't who he was at the end of Return of the Jedi.
I'd say this movie is the "A New Hope" for a new generation. Rey is the Luke Skywalker, Poe is the Han Solo, BB-8 is the R2-D2, and Han is the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the film.
Adam Driver as Kylo Ren was great as the villain. And Kylo Ren is not a Darth Vader clone. He has flaws, a temper, and an arc in this film.
Visually, this movie is amazing. The first act of this this movie Jakku does not have a lot of dialogue, and it's not needed. The space battle are great to watch and so are the aliens. And this film does have a lot of aliens that are practical effects (with some being cgi, but they weren't bad). And the lightsaber fight at the end may be one of the best of the series.
Now for those still wondering where Luke Skywalker is in the movie and how he's not in the posters and promotions, don't worry, it's intentional. Mark Hamill is in the movie and it's probably my favorite part of the film.
What's also great is the humor. This movie has a lot of fun and funny moments but isn't a comedy. There's humor and one-liners where there needs to be, but it fits with the characters, like in the Original Trilogy. And the humor isn't juvenile like in "The Phantom Menace" with Jar Jar.
Now as much as I love this movie, there are some problems. At times, the film does take too much from the original films. And there is a character that I felt was terribly underused, but that's something that can be corrected in future films. And none of the Star Wars films are perfect (like all films), but this film is up there with the Original Trilogy.
If you haven't seen this film yet and love Star Wars, go see it. Though honestly I recommend this film to everyone even if their not Star Wars fans, (but being a huge Star Wars fan makes the experience better).
