The comicbook community and superhero-lovers of all shapes and sizes are in for the best time of their lives when 2016 rolls around. One film in particular has fans skeptical, ecstatic, and ready for the new year of comicbook movies, and that would be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The upcoming superhero film will mark the first major crossover in the DCCU that began with 2013's Man of Steel, which despite the criticism, was a modest box-office success. This time around the Dark knight and the Man of Steel will come to blows after Gotham's vigilante becomes convinced that our favorite red-cape wearing kryptonian is a threat that dwarfs even the worst global crisis and must be dealt with accordingly.
Here's the plot synopsis:
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
This film is essentially going to be the make-or-break moment for the overall DC cinematic universe and could possibly influence how successful it is going forward. Fans have been waiting for ages, some longer than others, to see DC's most iconic characters share the screen in a grandiose way for all to see. Batman's motivations in this film will be pretty clear-cut in terms of how he feels towards Superman, and Superman seems to a bit conflicted about his role as earth's newest defender, as well as pressure mounting on him from Washington and the media following the events of Man of Steel. Ultimately, all of this is just a "perfect storm" whipped up by a very cunning Lex Luthor who seeks to pit Batman and Superman against each other, thus, killing two birds with one stone. The problem is, much to the displeasure of Lex, there appears to be a 3rd bird, Wonder Woman. While the amazonian's motives remain a bit a unclear, we can assume based on the trailer that she plays some kind of role in temporarily calming the storm between the title heroes in order to confront an even greater threat, also created by Lex. In the end, the events of this film will culminate in the formation of the Justice league who will come together to safeguard mankind at a later date and time.
Batman vs. Superman also holds alot of significance since it will be tackling issues that are relevant in today's world such as global/national security, accountability of public servants, terrorism, loss, revenge, politics, corruption, religion, government, purpose, hope, indifference, and ideas of a savior/ savior complex. All audiences will ultimately find something that they can relate to and understand on a personal level that extends beyond what seems like just another superhero blockbuster. Whether Batman vs. Superman will live up to hardcore fans expectations about what the film should be has yet to be seen, but there is very little chance that it will falter at the box-office. Overall, fans and casual viewers are in for what could be another triumph in the comicbook movie era.
