The first trailer was originally planned to be released at the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Since the trailer (German Language version) got leaked onto YouTube on the morning of 13 the December. Paramount Pictures decided to release the trailer on 14th December.
It’s the third installment of the rebooted trek franchise.

Well, how was the trailer?
The trailer wasn’t really bad. It’s just that it wasn’t like a Star Trek trailer. This is simply not the type of trailer Star Trek fans were expecting. Also the trailer didn’t show too many things that could actually provoke our interest. Some mysterious scenes or something that could get the fans all excited were not there. I mean the trailer didn’t give particular anything which could be discussed 24/7.We know Justin Lin replaced Abrams as director. And even if you didn’t know that, probably the trailer made you think so. The trailer looks like a combination of Fast and Furious and Guardians of the Galaxy. Action packed, rocking and slick humor. But, so not The Star Trek we know off. What I am saying is that the trailer lacks the Star Trek vibe. You know like for example the 2009-Star Trek trailer. The characters, Star Trek theme music’s, landscapes, and dialogues these things which could make the trailer Star Trekish weren’t there.
George Takei gave a review to the Tech Insiders-
while he thought it looked like a great action-packed fun film; he commented that it lacked the "substance" that made Gene Roddenberry's original offerings "so engaging.
Major stuffs we notice in the trailer-
The Enterprise encounters some swarms or some kind of life form, and the ship is extremely damaged, kung-fu kicking aliens, phaser battles , some dirt bike stunts, extremely easy use of transporter, crews have been stranded.
Going into the details, the trailer starts with the music- Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. This highlights Kirks interest in classic rock.
The uniforms changed to a great extent. We didn’t see that type of change before. The classic uniforms inspired by the TV shows. With V-collars and stripes has been replaced these new type of uniforms. More traditional style, solid colors, biker-jacket type and action oriented.
Spock’s uniform looks different than that of the other enterprise crews. There’s a ‘USS Franklin’ shoulder patch. Why? We don’t know yet.
The enterprise faces a major attack and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end well for them.
At Star Trek into Darkness, destruction of the enterprise was teased. However, we know that it didn’t happen. (It ended up being the vengeance)
But, this time I don’t see the ship making it out unharmed. It looks like they are going to get stuck in a hostile planet with no way out.
We see unimaginable amount of action in this short trailer.. Escape pods like never seen before, Scotty jumping out just before his escape capsule topples over a cliff and many other indications.
There’s this dirt bike stunt scene many fans are pissed off with but I don’t know why but I kind of liked it. It could be acceptable depending upon the circumstances and the condition there.
The funniest scene of the trailer is when Bones and Spock are surrounded by some weirdo ships trying to attack them. And Bones jokes that at least he won’t die alone, before Spock is teleported away from there.. But, how and by whom is a question. By the way, it’s great to see Bones and Spock together right?
Then we see a white alien chick kicking asses. The characters name is still unknown but is played by Sofia Boutella (Known for her recent Kingsman:The Secret Service) This looks like a new species. But, has some resemblance with the pre-warp civilization on Nibiru. She looks frightened the rest of the time and is probably a friend of the enterprise.
And then we have this latex head bad guy. Who is most probably being played by Idris Elba. (The assumption came since he signed up for this movie and wasn’t seen in the trailer)
He quotes - “This is where it begins, Captain. This is where the frontier pushes back!”
I would like to mention that Star Trek did one thing very fine. That’s not revealing the plot. Many current movies are literally giving out the entire story in their trailers.
Zoe Saldana was seen with a grey alien giving her a bad time from behind.
From the shot above we can see enterprise crews are stranded by some soldiers. So the movie will be like If Kirk can save the crew and get them back safely.
However, I am still positive. And I think the regular Star Trek fans shouldn’t get totally mad right now. It was just one trailer.
I think which was done for marketing purpose. The old fans will eventually watch 2nd and 3rd trailer. And will probably end up going to the theatres anyway. What they are trying to do with their first marketing campaign is to catch new audience. The film is scheduled to be released at July,2016. So, I think we will get to see more trailers. And I believe the next trailer will be for the old fans. This marketing experiment can turn out to be very successful or just the opposite.
Peggs recent interview gives us more hopes. As he said:
“I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film,”
“There’s a lot more story and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more, what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff’”.
“To the Star Trek fans I’d say ‘Hang in there. Be patient’”
Besides, Abrams is the producer so there will be his influence. The writing team has Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. So, I want to believe things will turn out well.
I am assuming that Star Trek Beyond will have the higher earnings compared to the previous 2 films. For now let’s hope for the best to happen.
Director: Justin Lin
