Was anyone else shocked at that one big moment in The Force Awakens? Okay, let's just get it out there: Han Solo dies. I'm sure we're all still coming to terms with this, but we need to band together and talk about what happened... we can do this!

You might know that Harrison Ford has actually been trying to bring about the death of Han Solo for years. That's right, since the early days of the original Star Wars trilogy Ford has been trying to kill off Solo.

Forget Kylo Ren, it's Harrison Ford that really brought an end to Han Solo! But why did Ford want to finally kill off his most iconic character?

Well, in an interview with Conan, Harrison Ford – who famously hates being interviewed, cut straight to chase, revealing his thoughts behind the death of Han Solo in The Force Awakens.

There we have it folks; as you can see in the above video, when Conan said, "You've tried for years to get the character of Han Solo killed," Ford replied:

"It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I thought the best utility of the character would be for him to sacrifice himself to a high ideal and give a little bottom, a little gravitas to the enterprise, not that there wasn’t some already but I just wanted in on that part of it. That was at the third occasion of filming the original three."

Simply, Ford wanted Solo to go out with a bang, sacrificing himself for an honorable reason, proving that the most legendary smuggler in the history of science fiction stands for something greater than himself.

Conan then asked if Ford has always wanted Han Solo to have an honorable death, to which Harrison Ford replied:

"Preferably, rather than an accident!"

That seems fair and even logical. It pains me to write, but perhaps Solo really did just need to go out in a blaze of glory and prove himself to be the ultimate hero.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens repeatedly paid homage to the original Star Wars trilogy, so perhaps Solo's huge role in the movie, followed by his death, was the best way to introduce a new generation of fans Star Wars, while also giving Han Solo the send off he deserves. But how will the galaxy far, far away cope without our beloved hero? How will Chewbacca fare in the company of Rey?

Here's another look at one of the incredible trailers for 'Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.'

Do you think Han Solo's death was the right thing for the character?
