The Force isn't the only thing that has awoken this year. The first Star Wars film in a decade has awoken the galactic imaginations of fans worldwide and, as expected, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completely smashed the box office.

In its opening weekend, J.J.Abrams' space saga grossed $238 million, making it the most lucrative weekend of all time, ahead of heavyweight blockbusters Avengers, Jurassic World, and Harry Potter.

Now, we all know money doesn't necessarily equate to critical acclaim. And when it comes to Star Wars, reviews range from the fanatically deluded to the uber critical. However, across the board, reviews having been glowingly positive.

The Most Successful Movie of All Time?

When you consider those who have seen it will probably go again, and the hype is so fervent (even those who don't identify as fans will get caught up in the metaphorical hype hurricane) this could become the highest grossing movie of all time. And experts agree. The current record belongs to Avatar, which grossed $2.7bn worldwide.

It's the first of the Star Wars franchise to be released by Disney following their acquisition of the film's rights from Lucasfilm for over $4 billion in 2012. Two further movies, to be released in 2017 and 2019, will reinforce the series as a new global force of a franchise for a new generation.
