It's not often we see a theatrical Christmas horror film so I had hoped Krampus would be a great film. Was it any good? Is this film Naughty? Or is it nice?
Brief Spoiler Free Summary
One day around Christmas time, a family gets together to celebrate the holidays. However there's some serious tension between almost all the family members which makes it almost impossible for them to have a good time. One of the kids then rips up his letter to Santa and wishes for his family to go away, accidentally summoning Krampus. And...basically Krampus and his elves attack the family.
The first character I want to talk about is Max played by Emjay Anthony ("Insurgent", "Rake", "It's Complicated") and he's...I mean, he's not bad but he's not really good either. He's decent for a child actor but that kinda means, bad for a normal actor. However I will say this, I do like how Max learned a lesson by the end of the film unlike other Christmas horror films where there's no lesson to be learned.
Next we have Tom, played by Adam Scott ("Step Brothers", "Parks and Recreation", "Star Trek: First Contact") and he's probably the best human character in this film, although that's not saying much considering most of the other human characters in this film are just awful, disgusting people with little to no redeeming qualities about them. He's probably the bravest character outta the whole cast.
Finally we have Krampus played by Gideon Emery ("How to Train Your Dragon 2", "God of War III", "Daredevil") and he's the best character in the movie; by far. Krampus steals every scene he's in because of his amazing design and his interactions with the human characters.
Now while they aren't really characters, the monsters like Der Klown and the snake monster, are just amazing. Seriously their designs are the best thing in this movie.
It's not really scary. That's the film's biggest problem is that it's just not scary because all the scares are just "Five Night's at Freddy's" style jumpscares and they're predictable as ever. If a horror film fails at being scary then it really isn't a horror film anymore. So if it's not scary, it usually will have a good story to it, sadly that isn't he case. It's an interesting setup for a film but it just...it just feels like a home invasion film that we've already seen done to death.
Like I mentioned before, the story starts out interesting but then kinda turns into a generic home invasion movie, only with freaky monsters and a goat demon from hell. However without giving away the ending, the ending is pretty original and probably the best part of the story. Also like I said before, almost every character is unlikable and have zero redeemable qualities.
Overall Krampus is a mediocre horror film. It has great effects, a great ending and Krampus is amazing. However the plot is kinda bland and the characters aren't very good. I'd say give it a watch; rent it or something, just don't buy it.
