Hollywood Horrors takes its readers on a ride into the darkness of The City Of Broken Dreams
It was a cool September night in 1932, when a bundle of belongings were dropped off at the Hollywood Police Station, after a woman called to report finding the items and a suicide note during her hike along the Hollywood Land sign (now known as the Hollywood sign). The woman refused to identify herself, but she also let the police know one more thing, down at the bottom of the sign was a body. The Hollywood Police went to investigate the report when they came across the body of a young well dressed blonde woman. The coroner stated the unknown woman died from multiple fractures to the pelvis.
The body went unidentified until her suicide letter and description were released to the public, in which a man came forward saying he was the late woman’s uncle and her name was Peg Entwistle. Peg was an up and coming actress who had several Broadway productions under her belt, her performances were so grand that a young Bette Davis once told her mother, “I want to be exactly like Peg Entwistle”. Peg, like many other would be stars, moved to Hollywood in hopes of advancing her career. While she did do a play and one movie (that was released after her death), Peg’s dreams weren’t playing out the way she wanted. Becoming a rising star was harder to do during the great depression, more than anyone knew. Entwisle’s uncle, who she had been staying with, told the police that she said she was going out on the 16th of September to meet up with some friends.
That was all a lie to cover up Entwisle’s true intentions, she went down to the Hollywood Land sign (which was then less of a trademark than it is today, the sign was in place to bring attention to the housing area along the hill side), she climbed a worker’s ladder to the top of the H where she leaped to her death. While her death did bring fame to both herself and the Hollywood sign, it was the events after her death that kept people talking:
- One: Entwisle’s uncle said after her death she received a telegram from New York, she was requested to star in a new play, where the star has trouble finding work and commits suicide at the end.
- Two: There have been countless reports of a classically dressed woman walking the hill side of the Hollywood sign, many believe it to be Peg, unable to rest after her death.
There has been many reports and a play about Peg’s life and now there is talks of a movie. Sadly in death, Peg Entwisle became the star she never was in life. Her last words to the world read:
“I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E"
