Marvel has been around for over fifty years, and in that time there have been hundreds of romances between superheroes we know and love! Some were little flings, but others have become famously iconic. We live in a time where the superhero genre is popular, and we've been lucky to see several of these romances appear in both film and television.
Jessica Jones and Luke Cage have recently hit the small screen in a wonderfully unique way! Mr Fantastic and the Invisible Woman have had a few big screen incarnations, and others like Iron Man and Pepper, Thor and Jane Foster, Xavier and Moira, Peter Parker, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, and Captain America and Peggy Carter have had some wonderful on screen time! There are, however, many more iconic Marvel Comics romances we have yet to see come to film or television. here's my list of my Top 10 that I am dying to see, and how they could change their franchises forever!
10. Kitty and Colossus
Kitty and Colossus were prominently featured in X-Men: the Last Stand and X-Men Days of Future Past, but their romance wasn't explored, instead Kitty was involved with fellow teammate, Iceman.
In the comics, Kitty and Colossus were off and on for a long time, but ultimately Colossus died, sacrificing himself for the team, and Kitty took his remains to his home in Russia. Several years later they were reunited when Beast discovered the "mutant cure" had a string of Colossus' DNA in the baseline of the drug. During a raid on the facility, where the X-Men expected to find Colossus' dead body, they found their teammate alive and captive. The body that had been cremated was a fake and Colossus had been resurrected with alien technology as this company looked for a "mutant cure". At this time Kitty and Colossus became the resident hot couple at the X-Mansion.
Later the couple broke up because of Colossus' desire for power. He stole the Cyttorak power from the Juggernaut increasing his strength, and soon after the Phoenix was split into fragments possessing five of the X-Men including Colossus. During this time, his power mongering came out in his personality, and Kitty told him they were done for good.
With last year's X-Men reset during Days of Future Past, it's very possible that Kitty and Colossus are together in the new alternate future. In fact we did see them teaching at the Xavier Institute together. With the mainstream timeline abandoned, and most of its actors unlikely to return (Cudmore who previously played Colossus declined to return for the character in the upcoming Deadpool) it's doubtful we'll see this romance in an X-Men film. I'd love to see Colossus' power hungry personality come to a film one day, though. It would be really interesting to see the fall of a hero, and what he loses. I think the Phoenix Five would make an amazing film!
9. Kitty and Star Lord
The X-Men have a long history of cosmic adventures, and it would be really cool to see this translate into the X-Men franchise! In the comics after Kitty has finished with Colossus, she and the X-Men had another adventure where they met Peter Quill and the Guardians.
In the comics, Kitty and Quill began dating and she left Earth to be with him. The two become engaged and Kitty joined Quill and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Not too long later Quill's father J'Son steps down as Emperor and Quill became Emperor of Spartax, with Kitty at his side as first lady!
Even though seeing the Guardians and the X-Men team up would be amazing on the big screen, and we're still waiting for the X-Men to become more "cosmic", the X-Men rights are over at Fox and the Guardians rights are still with Marvel. In the 90s when Marvel was strapped for cash they sold the film rights to several of their characters and teams including the X-Men. Unfortunately for us, it's unlikely we'll ever see this romance played out, instead we can only speculate who Star Lord could end up with in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
8. Captain America and Sharon Carter
Even though Sharon Carter only had a small role in Captain America: Winter Soldier, she and Rogers have a long romance in the comics that goes back to the 60s!
When the two were dating Sharon was killed while under mind control by Dr. Faustus, but was resurrected in the early 2000s, and they resumed their relationship. Soon after the Superhero Civil War took place, when Cap gave himself up to the authorities, he was shot by a sniper who turned out to be Sharon, again under mind control by Faustus who had been working with Crossbones. As it played out, however, the bullet was revealed to have phased Cap out of time and space, and not killed him. Eventually Rogers was brought back and Carter and he resumed their relationship yet again.
With Agent 13's addition to the MCU, it's very likely that we'll see some sort or romantic relationship between the two in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, but the real question fans want to know is Will we see Carter be the one to shoot Captain America? This could potentially change the MCU forever as one of it's most prolific characters dies! Would he die for real, or would they replicate the story from the comic of the bullet that phased him into another dimension?
7. Hawkeye and Mockingbird
Hawkeye is one of the longstanding members of the Avengers in the MCU and we just met his wife and children in Age of Ultron. It added some perspective for the team, as they hid out with the family, they were reminded of why they keep fighting. It's true that in the Ultimate Marvel universe, Hawkeye had a wife and family, but things didn't end happily like they did at the end of Age of Ultron. Instead Black Widow betrayed the Avengers to terrorists and kills Hawkeye's wife and children. Dark stuff, right? Will we see this play out in the MCU? Unlikely that we'll see Widow murder the family, but I don't know if it's out of the realm of possibilities to see the family die viciously. It would add some wonderful depth and tone to Hawkeye though!
In the mainstream marvel comics, Hawkeye is actually in an off and on again relationship with fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and Avenger, Mockingbird. While both characters have been introduced into the MCU in their different platforms it seems unlikely we'll even see these two cross paths! I'm still hoping that Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. team to see the Avengers before long, but with Hawkeye's existing family and Bobbi's current relationship with teammate Hunter it seems very unlikely anything will happen between these two anytime soon! However I think that by not uniting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Avengers films would be a terrible missed opportunity!
6. Storm and Black Panther
Another couple on the list we can expect to never seen on screen together is Black Panther and Storm! Just like Star Lord and Kitty these two characters' film rights are held by different studios. It's a shame because they were a huge powerhouse couple in the comics that I would love to see together!
The two were given a backstory of being teenage lovers, who grew apart as Storm joined the X-Men and T'Challa became King of his home Wakanda. It was during the Superhero Civil War that these two finally tied the knot. Storm left the X-Men for a time and became Queen of Wakanda, and the two heroes even temporarily led the Fantastic Four when Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman took a break.
The two became a strong couple in the Marvel universe doing much good for the mutant population of the world with their strong influence. Storm became a reserve member of both the Avengers and X-Men teams, but it was during the Avengers vs X-Men story line where the Phoenix Five were attempting to re-make the world that Storm sided with the X-Men against the Avengers which pitted Storm against T'Challa. The Phoenix Five ended up destroying Wakanda, and killing all of its inhabitants. Understandably, T'Challa did not forgive Storm for the part she had played in his people's death, and the two permanently split.
It really is a shame that we'll never see them together on screen! A strong African couple that crossed X-Men and Avengers franchises would be amazing to have in a film!
5. Cyclops and Emma Frost
When non-comic book fans think of Cyclops, their minds instantly go to his long-time love, and wife, Jean Grey. However, if you're a fan of the comics you know that before Jean's death in the early 2000s he was cheating in a telepathic affair with Emma Frost. Jean quickly found out (after all she's a psychic) and a rift divided the two until Jean died and she told Scott that he needs to move on.
Scott and Emma soon became a couple and co-headmasters of the Xavier Institute. They led the the X-Men through some of their most difficult times as their race was nearly erased from existence by the Scarlet Witch, Xavier's death, the destruction of the Institute and murder of dozens of students. Eventually, a mutant child was born and Scott and Emma led the X-Men against terrorists, and other mutants who were all trying to find the child. Finally the two became two of the Phoenix Five, but couldn't agree on the bigger picture and they fought each other for entire control of the Phoenix.
I would love to see their romance come to the big screen, and Emma has always been one of my favorite characters! According to Magneto in Days of Future Past, she was killed by Trask in his mutant experiments, but we never saw her killed, her body wasn't in the images that Mystique found so there's still hope that he was misinformed.
What I would hope to see is the X-Men find Emma's shattered diamond form and Jean telekinetically puts her back together restoring her life, just as she once did in the comics. January Jones was awesome as Emma, but was relegated to a supporting character. A sidekick to the villain when her character could be so much more! Seeing Scott and Emma on the big screen would really bring out Scott's dark side as their relationship did in the comics. So far in the movies, all we've seen is a whiny and annoying Cyclops. I'm hoping this changes as we re-cast a younger version and the franchise starts anew, but bring in Emma to make Cyclops daring and edgy!
4. Gambit and Rogue
Even though we've seen Rogue in four X-Men films, and Gambit in Wolverine: Origins and his upcoming solo Gambit, we have yet to see them together on screen! Their romance is one of the most iconic romances of the entire X-Men series!
The two originally met after Gambit had reformed and joined the X-Men. The relationship was extremely rocky as Rogue could not control her powers, and the two were unable to touch for a long time. Eventually they were both de-powered and left the X-Men to pursue a normal life together. However the mutant Sage re-powered both characters and they re-joined the X-Men. The two soon broke up because they were again unable to be close, but Emma Frost helped them live out their romance with the help of her telepathy. It's kind of a creepy to think of these two having to use Emma's mind as a bridge to have sex with their own minds. Emma would have been there the entire time, right?
The two have a very fascinating story in an alternate future in X-Men: the End. The couple had left the X-Men to live normal lives and had two children, Oliver and Becca. In this story, their children were kidnapped so they enlisted the help of their old teammates. Mr Sinister, a long time villain of the X-Men, but especially Gambit, is revealed to be the kidnapper. The story ends with several prominent X-Men being killed including both Rogue and Gambit.
These two need to be together in a movie! I'm still hoping something will come out very soon that confirms Anna Paquin's Rogue will be making at least a cameo with Channing Tatum in Gambit.
3. Hulkling and Wiccan
During a time when the Avengers were disbanded, a team of super powered teenagers came together calling themselves the Young Avengers. Wiccan has the same powers as his mother, the Scarlet Witch, and Hulkling is a shape shifting alien, half-Skrull and half-Kree, the son of Captain Mar-Vell and a Skrull Princess. With his parentage he was naturally green, but with his shape shifting ability he can become anyone and often sports gigantic leather wings like a gargoyle.
The two are probably the most prominent homosexual couple in Marvel comics, and it's about time that we get some diversity coming to the big screen! The comic does a great job of showing that Teddy and Billy are together, but never using the platform to be pushy. I would want the same thing out of a film, we don't need gay characters just because they're gay, (*cough* GLEE) we need gay characters that are normal people who happen to not be heterosexual.
I think we're a ways off from the Scarlet Witch having teenage kids, but I'm hoping that sometime in the next decade, the Young Avengers receive their own movie! Avengers: Infinity Wars sounds as if it's likely several of our key Avengers will be killed, and it would make sense for the remaining team to go on hiatus. A young team coming into the spotlight would be awesome!
2. Vision and the Scarlet Witch
For comic book fans, it wil be exciting to see these heroes romance play out on the big screen. Both were introduced in last year's Age of Ultron, but never spoke to each other. The only tease we got was Vision flying in to save Wanda's life when she had decided to die on Sokovia as it crashed into the Earth. Both were seen as members of Cap's New Avengers at the end of the movie, and both will be appearing in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.
In the comics they were both Avengers and had a very tender relationship. Wanda had become reformed, leaving her days of mutant terrorism behind her with her father Magneto. She had desired for a normal life, so marriage to an android made sense! Eventually, the two were married, and very much wanted to have their own children, but since Vision is an android, Wanda used her magics to become pregnant. Eventually, it's realized that the children are not entirely real, and that Wanda is beginning to lose her mind, and her grasp on reality. Dr. Strange attempts to help, but Wanda unknowingly destroys the Avengers mansion killing Scott Lang, Vision, and Hawkeye.
These two definately have a complicated relationship! Vision is an android who does not understand human emotions, and Wanda is a former villain with many different sides to her personality - some of which she isn't even aware of! I am certain that we will see this romance played out in the MCU, however only time will tell how close it'll be to the complicated romance of the comics!
1. Black Widow and Winter Soldier
The final romance on this list will surprise non-comic book fans! Black Widow and the Winter Soldier are my top pick of romances that would change the MCU!
Even though the two only were together briefly in the comics I can't think of any two characters in the MCU who make more sense together than these! Sure we saw Widow crushing on Banner in Age of Ultron, but since Banner went back into hiding, it makes sense for her to move on, and even feel abandoned by him if he did come back.
Even though Widow has had an extremely traumatic life, Bucky has had it worse! It would be very cool to see both of them have some semblance of normalcy, and I think both would be able to love and understand the other in a way that no one else could.
At the end of the Superhero Civil War, after Captain America's death, Natasha is asked to take his shield away to a safe place but she's intercepted by Bucky who takes it to become the new Captain America. With these two on opposite sides in the upcoming [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) it would be very cool to see some sort of similar thing play out! This romance would be fun for so many reasons, but mostly because both are trying to so hard to be heroes. It would be cool to see them become a team, and a couple overcoming their past. A solo Cap movie could even be called Captain America and the Black Widow!
These relationships would be so fun on screen, and could potentially change their franchises! I know some can't happen because of film rights, but now that Sony and Marvel have agreed to work together with Spider-Man I'm going to fantasize that Fox with the X-Men will one day do the same!
